A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who was seeking to lead the party in the 2020 election, Stephen Atubiga, has said former President John Mahama has now become an ‘object of worship’ due to the poor performance of the Akufo-led administration.
According to him, his major reason for withdrawing from the flagbearer race was to support Mr. Mahama because Ghanaians are rallying behind the former president and cannot wait to see the exit of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“Bad governance of the NPP has made JDM a god every Ghanaian is worshipping today. In my lengthy discussion with Mr. Mahama, I can confidently say that his vision matches mine. He gave me an assurance of pulling the party along, building party offices in the constituencies, creating jobs and empowering the youth.” Mr. Atubiga whilst announcing his withdrawal also singled out Mr. Mahama for what he said was his exceptional abilities to give the party victory.
“I believe all aspirants have what it takes to lead this country, but having to listen to them all, John Mahama is the only one who can give us victory. JDM stands tall as far as the people’s choice is concerned. The era where money meant for party works were hoarded by some person is one of the things he has promised to annihilate as far as our party is concerned. When it comes to logistics and mobilization for our party, JDM stands tall,” he said.
Atubiga pulls out of NDC flagbearer race; declares support for Mahama
On Tuesday, Stephen Atubiga, announced his withdrawal from the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.
Mr. Stephen Atubiga communicated his decision to the leadership of the NDC through a letter he sent to the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu, who read the letter on Tuesday.
He also declared his support for former President John Mahama who has already filed his nomination to contest in the primaries in January 2019.
“Having submitted myself to counsel, prayers and direction, I wish to withdraw from the NDC flagbearer election ahead of the 2020 election. I have decided to throw my weight behind His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, I want to personally thank my brother Haruna Iddrisu for his wise counsel and brotherly advice and counsel. My gratitude to the party and council of elders for their intervention and role played regarding the upcoming flagbearer race of the great NDC party.”
I’ll only respond to presidential candidates; not aspirants – Nana Addo
President Nana Akufo-Addo does not give a hoot about criticisms from presidential aspirants, ostensibly in reference to criticisms from presidential hopefuls of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Akufo-Addo has said he will only respond to criticisms from a presidential candidate and not an aspirant.
“I am sure you have seen and heard some of the presidential aspirants of the leading opposition party taking jabs at my government in order, ostensibly, to prop up their campaigns. And, whilst at it, they are desperately trying to get me to respond to them.”
“Let me state here and now, for the record, that President Akufo-Addo will not respond to presidential aspirants. He will respond to presidential candidates that have been duly elected by their parties. Then, he will engage those who still think Ghanaians have short memories,” he said.
Presidential aspirants are also citizens; not spectators – Mahama replies Akufo-Addo
Former President John Mahama took on President Akufo-Addo for saying he will not respond to criticisms of flagbearer aspirants about his government.
John Mahama said aspirants are also citizens of the country who can criticize Akufo-Addo and his government, and they expect a response from him.
Mahama said if Akufo-Addo persists with his posture of not responding to aspirants, Ghanaians will eventually demand accountability from his New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
“What I wish to remind Mr. President is that, as presidential aspirants, we are also citizens and not spectators, and we are only amplifying the voice of our fellow citizens. Mr. President can choose not to respond to us, but eventually, citizens will demand that response and exact a verdict [on the government],” Mahama said.

If John mahama us ndc God then I don't know how Ghanaians will call the man with a vision, the man with unprecedented policies, the man who is correcting ndc and john mahama mess you people just feel like talking and opening your cavities to let out some hot bad air! Atubiga the joker of the century and my question is why are some of you Northerners in the ndc making yourselves jokers in Ghana? and that is hurting the ndc party big time. I think you need experts to get you through serious training to lnow how to comport yourselves since politics is a serious business! Look at how John mahama is causing confusion in the ndc, just because he thinks becoming president is his right at all cost! who in the South would you think will have this mentality only Atubiga and John mahama ! Try to bring honour small to your people since some of them are very good and could be excellent presidents. This becoming serial flagbearer will not help, after all what do you gain from that! John mahama knows the good people of Ghana will not vote for him but yet still he wouldn't give the chance to another to try, eno nso so y3 plan ben? We can't allow that Dr Limann being thrown out by coup and coming back to contest to exist with us. John mahama is too much and greedy, double salary ,double ex-gratia ! what has Ghana done to you people.
