The flag bearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama has said Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah deserves to be celebrated today, 6 March 2019 as Ghana celebrates its 62nd independence anniversary and not denigrated.
His comment comes on the heels of moves by the President Akufo-Addo-led government to rename Founder’s Day as Founders’ Day.
The Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition, which birthed the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) believes Dr Nkrumah did not fight for independence alone and, therefore, cannot be credited as the sole founder of Ghana.
To this end, the government is seeking to scrap AU Day and Republic Day as public holidays and introduce January 7 as Constitution Day and make September 21 Nkrumah Memorial Day.
The NDC is strongly against the move, arguing that Nana Akufo-Addo is seeking to re-write the history of Ghana and glorify his late family members such as J.B. Danquah and Ofori-Atta.
In his Independence Day message, Mr Mahama, in a Facebook post, said: “Let us continue to thank God for how far he has brought us as a country. We are not where we should be, but we should be thankful for the many blessings that God has brought our way. “Our country’s Founder, Dr Kwame Nkrumah deserves on this day to be celebrated not denigrated for his tireless leadership that brought us independence 62 years ago.”

Is it the scrapping of AU Day and Republic Day 1st July which is dinigrating Kwame Nkrumah? AU day was never celebrated as a Holiday even when Kwame Nkrumah was alive. Why do we celebrate the 1st Republic and then leave out the current dispensation under which Constitution we are being governed. Which Constitution do we quote if it is the 4th Republic then why not celebrate it. NDC please go and rethink there is no harm to Kwame Nkrumah stop PRETENDING.
ALL ***barred word*** COMMENTS, LOOK AT THE FACT AND NOT POLITICS, ARE U ALL MORE IMPORTANT THAN JOHN MAHAMA OF THE NDC? THANK GOD WE HAVE JOHN MAHAMA TO TAKE GHANA FORWARD AGAIN. NPP TAKES US BACK 20YRS. ***barred word***'S LIKE NANA AND NPP
Confused man. Any opportunity he gets he display his incompetent.
There goes the "INCOMPETENT ONE" again. In his usual hypocritical and sen*seless elements he's pretending to be "fighting" for Nkrumah's course. Meanwhile, when he got the opportunity to add his name to the group of leaders in Ghana, Mahama could only manage a classic failure through reckless ***barred word*** of our monies. Creat Loot and Share is still fresh in our minds. Somebody should tell DESPERATE INCOMPETENT MAHAMA that Nkrumah died long long ago and cares less about his phantom "denigration". It appears Mahama attended a different celebration with Kanazoe at Burkina where he heard the name of Nkrumah being denigrated. DESPERATE SOUL!
Look John Mahama, you are not more Ghanaian than anybody. What was done during the celebration to denegrate Kwame Nkrumah. How can one tree be classified as a forest? Kwame Nkrumah led the process but was assisted by others do you want their work to be in vain? You are rather very ungrateful to Ex President Rawlings who founded the NDC and you are now carrying the party on your shoulder as if he has no knowledge about how the party was formed. You are a hypocrite your attitude does not show that you have love for the country Ghana. Did you realize the cold reception you were given at the 62nd Independence Day celebration, it calls for reflection on your part.
Look who is talking, Who are the beneficiaries of the over throw of the last Nkrumah government...(P)NDC is benefiting from overthrow of last Nkrumah government which incompetent JDM became president...if ndc loves Nkrumah why should they overthrow his last government. NDC is crying more than the bereaved...cpp...NDC is hypocrate when it comes to Nkrumah's party cpp.
This Mahama guy paa, the least about him the better.

Tell us who has denigrated the name of Kwame Nkrumah? You should be extolling Rawlings for forming a party through which you became a president and not talk about Kwame Nkrumah.
I doff my hat for all six previous comments! Hypocrisy is bad!
