Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otokunor, has posited that the creation of new regions, especially the Western North Region, will not necessarily translate into votes for the Akufo-Addo government in 2020 elections.
Speaking on Okay FM’s "Ade Akye Abia" Morning Show, Otukunor insisted the Akufo-Addo government will be shooting itself in the foot to assume that by creating the Western North region, people in the area will automatically vote for the NPP in 2020 elections.
“They should delude themselves in thinking that by dividing the Western Region to have Western North, automatically the people over there will vote for them; they are deceiving themselves. Let’s check for the development that the NPP administration has given to the people of Western North within 2 years in office; there is nothing to show for in Western North. In fact, the road network that under the Mahama-led NDC was being carried out at No. 81 to Bodi, the NPP has asked that work should be halted on the project and the contractors have been idle for close to 3 years now”, he asserted.
“...for almost 3 years nothing is done and so do you think these people will vote the NPP government? There are a lot of road network in Western North left hanging. In fact, the problem is with the Bia road which contractors were working but unfortunately, the NPP administration came to stop them and it has left the road in a deplorable state,” he disclosed.
Background
In the run up to the 2016 general elections, then candidate Nana Akufo-Addo pledged to facilitate the creation of four regions from the Western, Northern, Brong Ahafo and Northern regions on the back of proposals from the chiefs and people in the area.
On assumption of office he established the Ministry of Regional Reorganisation and Development primarily to spearhead the creation of the new regions which according to the government was at the heart of the people in the areas.
Since June 2017, the government has through the Ministry championed all the constitutional processes required in the creation of the regions including the December 27, 2018 referendum which allowed the people to overwhelmingly endorse the creation of six new regions.
With at least 80 per cent vote, the people of voted for Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah, North East, Western North and Oti to be created out of Brong Ahafo, Northern Region, Western Region and Volta Region.
In line with Article 5(8) of the 1992 Constitution, President Akufo-Addo, in February 2019, held the first of a series of ceremonies at the Jubilee House in Accra to issue a constitutional instrument to give effect to the new regions.
But while some believe it was a good course and might enure to the benefit of the ruling party in next year's general elections, others maintain that the creation of new regions is not something the president should be celebrating given the urgent bread and butter issues, as well as basic challenges of development that confronts the people of Ghana.
Unprecedented Mahama Infrastructure
Advancing reasons why the people of Western North will vote for the NDC to regain power in 2020, Peter Otokunor said it will be so because of the unprecedented works undertaken by the Mahama administration in the area.
“Just check out the road network at Juaboso to Bodi...the road network at Bibiani to Bekwai and from Bekwai to Wiawso and Juaboso is first class ultra-modern road. Quality road can be seen from Wiawso to Juaboso road; Bodi town roads are asphalted and so the road network at Western North is unprecedented”, he stated.
The NDC Deputy Chief Scribe was also optimistic that the NDC will reclaim the three constituencies within the area that it lost to the NPP in the 2016 election, because of the caliber of leaders they have elected in the new region.
“If we check our manifesto, we also wanted to create a new region in that area and so the fact that the NPP has hurriedly created a new region for them does not mean that the people over there will vote for the NPP....as for that one, anybody can do it, even a class 1 pupil who is made a president can create new regions”, he asserted.

Deputy General Secretary, what then is the big deal if "even a class 1" president could have created the regions. Mr Mahama was said to have promised the Gonja Chief that he would create a region for Gonjaland but totally failed to do so. The unfortunate point here is our great party allowing the same Mr Mahama to stand on our ticket immediately after losing over one million votes to challenge that same Nana Akufo Addo who gave us such a heavy spanking. Anyway, I hope our leaders would make sure Mr Mahama does not trouble us in 2024; that is, if our Lord had not yet come. I fully agree with Prof Alabi, when he observed Mr Mahama should not disturb us in 2024. These days, there are other men who wouldn't just sit down!!!!!!!
DO SOME OF WE GHANAIANS THINK BEFOR WE TALK. LIKE Otokunor , I AM SAD FOR HIM.
DO SOME OF WE GHANAS THINK BEFOR WE TALK. LIKE Otokunor , I AM SAD FOR HIM.
you are all losing sight of something . this guy have no idea what goes into creation of districts absolutely he has no clue.
Any time I see this guys face and teeth I get bad dreams. My little girl saw his picture and stated crying ''he's is coming to bite me,he's coming to bite me stop him'' so I have stopped buying any paper that features his picture.
Your party was in power for eight years why couldn’t you create some of regions means even the class one pupils can think more The your party. You fought for power but don’t know how to govern.
Wow, So if A class1 can create a region but 8 yrs in gov and never thought of it then NDC is simply create loot and share group. Looking back into 2012 and 2016, NDC waited for NPP to publish their manifesto before they (NDC ) could come wth alternative. NCD doesn't e a single policy for Ghanaians.
Su bo glass paa ese eben asem mpo yi? If it’s true that a class one pupil president can create new regions then you have wholly endorsed the incompetence of JDM who promised severally to do so and was unable to. From your statement I have resolved to ensure the guru of incompetency NEVER make it anywhere near the presidency. No wonder Ghana 🇬🇭 got to where we got to under the watch of one who couldn’t even do what class one pupils may find easy doing. Otwe be we ate3. At least through the tax payers money you have been able to transform from si bo glass to si bo plastic cup so you continue to talk by heart. You are seeking to come back and continue your plastic surgery eh?
You are always insulting Mahama, always washing your dirty linen outside. if Class 1 ppl can create and Mahama of all couldn't do it, then what message are you sending across....
