A former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantekyi has said the management of the country’s football association must apologise to Ghanaians for the abysmal performance of the Black Stars at the 2024 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
Nyantakyi said “Ghana deserves the best so if we fall short, whoever played a role in that should apologise to the people.”
Speaking on GTV Sports Plus on Friday (26 January), he said “of course [the GFA must apologise] the national team doesn’t belong to the FA. The FA is just a trustee, an agent managing the national on behalf of the people of Ghana.
“So somehow if the management of the team did not live up to the desire that people expect then they have to come out and apologise to them [Ghanaians]. I’ve done it before even though in our case in 2012 we got to the semi-finals.
Nyantakyi said the Ghana Football Association must take responsibility for the Black Stars shambolic performance at this year’s AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
“The pain is so much that we need to assuage the pain of the people by telling them they are sorry and being ready to make amends and move forward,” Nyantakyi said.
He is, however, calling on the GFA to put in place a five-year strategic plan to develop football in the country.
“We need a football strategic plan … and we need clear targets that we want to achieve,” Nyantakyi added.

Well said, i however believe we need a national dialogue on the Ghana black stars. So much is being spent on the team without any positive results to show. I remember the AFCON 1982 was some three weeks away when Rawlings staged the 31 December, 1981 which toppled the Dr HILLA LIMANN PNP government. The tournament was to be hosted by Libya. Rawlings immediately assembled local players majority of whom were Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko players. They went to Libya and came back home with the cup/trophy. I remember some of the players very well i e Samson Lamptey, Isaac Paha, Haruna Yussif, Kwesi Appiah, Albert Asaase, Emmanuel Quarshie, Kofi Badu, John Essien, Opoku Nti, Abedi Pele, John Bannerman, Windsor Kofi Abbrey, Ofei Ansah, Adolf Armah etc. All the AFCON Cups/trophies Ghana won in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982 were achieved by local players with a local coach. I strongly believe Ghana would have done better with local players in AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast. Lets try only local players in our next AFCON and compare the performance between foreign based players and local players .
