The Historic Nkrumah Circle Project

Last Monday, the President undertook a major ground-breaking ceremony to signal the beginning of work on a three-tier interchange at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

Over the years, many attempts have been made to update facilities to meet the demands of the growing population in Accra and those who visit the city daily. The human traffic in the area has always overwhelmed the capacities of the city authorities.

This project will help facelift the Nkrumah Circle in particular and the city in general, as the artist’s impression of the project does not only show how the road will look like but also captures how the drains will be done, the landscaping and the trees to be planted in the area.

The Circle is one flood-prone area in the city, as every major rain has flooded the roads, making movement very difficult.

Sanitation is also a challenge in the area, as the Odaw River is always choked with silt, refuse and human waste, and these contribute to flooding in the area.

Cutting the sod for the commencement of the project, President Mahama said considering the nature of Accra, the Kwame Nkrumah Circle was the busiest in the city and had become a bottleneck in urban transportation system.

We know that road construction under traffic is always a difficult endeavour. Therefore, work on the project will certainly inconvenience motorists and pedestrians who use the area. It is, therefore, heartwarming that the contractors have decided to work in the night and at weekends to ease the inconvenience on commuters.

The Daily Graphic is happy that there is South-South co-operation in the execution of the project, as the contractors, M/S Queiroz Galvao Constucao, are from Brazil.

The government of Brazil also provided the loan for the project.

We hope this project, when complected, will go a long way to enhance the beauty of the historic Kwame Nkrumah Circle and facilitate the endeavours of residents of the city.

This project must further the government’s better Ghana agenda, as it will become a lasting monument in honour of the late Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and boost efforts by the Mahama administration to fulfil its promise to the people.
