Police in Akyem Oda in the Eastern Region on Monday [February 17, 2020] arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of kidnapping a nine-year-old boy at Jamaica, a suburb of Akyem Asuboa.
Identified as Ebenezer Oko, the suspect is in police custody to assist with investigations.
According to the police on Sunday morning [February 16, 2020], the suspect who claimed to be a stranger from Accra asked the nine-year-old victim [name withheld] to assist him find his way from Akyem Asuboa to Akyem Manso which is a neighbouring town.
Later in the afternoon, the suspect called the mother of the victim on mobile phone to demand an amount of GH¢5,000 as ransom for his release, according to the police.
The police in a press statement said further investigations showed that the suspect travelled with the victim via public transport, a minibus [trotro], from Akyem Asuboa to Akyem Manso and continued to Akyem Asene and finally to Akyem Oda where the police traced and arrested him.
