The Akyem Ofoase District Magistrate Court in the Eastern Region has remanded a 25-year-old farmer into police custody for bussing people from the Ofoase-Ayirebi Constituency to Adeiso in the Upper West Akyem Constituency for voter registration purposes.

The Akyem Ofoase Police arrested Mr Benson Appiah Okai, a native of Akyem Ayirebi, at Akyem Anyinase aboard a Sprinter Benz bus on his way to Kyirimankani ostensibly to convey the second batch of prospective voters to Adeiso to register for their voter identity cards at Adeiso.

Facts

The court heard that following widespread rumours that some individuals were bussing people from the Ofoase-Ayirebi Constituency to go and register at Adeiso, the Ofoase District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ransford Nsiah, put his men on the alert to look for the possible culprits.

The prosecution said around 10 a.m. last Monday, the police personnel arrested Mr Appiah Okai at Akyem Ajobue when they spotted him on a Sprinter Benz bus heading towards Kyirimankani apparently to convey people to Adeiso to register.

It said the suspect was sent to the Ofoase District Police Headquarters and during interrogation, he admitted to the offence.

Confession

Mr Appiah Okai was said to have confessed to transporting 20 people from Akyem Otwereso and Kyirimankani the previous day to register at Adeiso.

The accused claimed that a man at Adeiso, whose name he only gave as Foster, contracted him for an undisclosed amount to transport as many people as possible to register at Adeiso.

Meanwhile, Mr Nsiah has told the Daily Graphic that the Ofoase Police will link up with their counterparts at Adeiso to apprehend the said Forson.
