The Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP), Mr John Kumah, has expressed concern over the dwindling number of students now taking Business Studies in Senior high Schools (SHS) across the country.
According to the NEIP CEO, data from the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) shows that very few students opted to take up Business studies.
He said the problem was so serious that some heads of senior high schools sometimes contemplate on closing down their business department.
“I am worried; go to our Senior High Schools and you will see that very few people are studying business. For instance, the CSSPS data for the Eastern Region shows some schools recorded only four students interested in business; the intake is low, and this, for me, is a serious problem. We will have a problem in the future if care is not taken”
Speaking at the launch of the Students Entrepreneurship initiative (SEI) in the Ashanti Region, Mr John Kumah called on all stakeholders to get involved and take the needed action to ensure the nation doesn’t lose a critical work force in the business sector.
He entreated parents to desist from discouraging their wards any time they express interest in studying business.

Very good observation. I blame our traditional universities, they have been bias against business students in admitting them since the commencement of SSCE in 1993. They prefer giving business related programmes to science and General Arts students. So when you study business at SSCE, your best bet was to go to Polytechnic (Now Technical Universities). One solution is to add Economics and Elective Maths to business subjects at SHS level. Business math & Costing can be dropped. so in effect business at SHS should read Economics, Elective Maths, Accounting and Management.
