TVET Made Easy Now With STEM Education - Deputy Education Minister

The Deputy Minister of Education in Charge of Technical and Vocational Education and Training(TVET), Hon. Gifty Twum-Ampofo has said that the massive introduction of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education into the Ghanaian educational system has made the study of vocational and technical education by especially students in the lower division who are being have interest in the TVET education and women who are doing men dominated jobs such as carpentry, auto mechanical engineering, construction, welding etc.

She made this statement in an interview with Peace fm at the the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) 2023 Women in TVET Conference themed; "Digital: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality" where she explained that TVET related jobs used to be perceived as jobs that entailed a lot of physical body involvement requiring a of strength and might to enable one execute a task, hence, women in particular were mostly discouraged from venturing into such jobs but says the massive involvement of STEM education has now made things easier for women in TVET as technology evolves.

Hon. Gifty Twum-Ampofo further hinted that the Government and the Ministry of Education have bought a lot of equipment and machineries needed to foster TVET and STEM education in the schools across the country to help students develop the interest in those areas.

She admonished students and teachers to make time to read the manuals that come with those equipment and machineries to put them into good use.

Speaking also in an interview with Mrs. Appiah Wiafe-Adofo who is the Director of the INVEST Project for World University Service College (WUSC), a Canadian Organisation that is focused mainly on building women in TVET and partner for the 3rd edition of the CTVET Women in TVET Conference, she remarked that TVET is the future and women must be encouraged to go into it as TVET related jobs have great potentials of giving women financial freedom they need, hence encouraged it's teaching in the basic schools so students will be fine tuned with the whole relevance of TVET as they climb the academic ladder.

Peace FM News also engaged with some young women (participants) in TVET jobs, Miss Doris Deku a tiler and award winner from Home Builders Africa Award as shining star 2022 and Miss Nanor Princess Dede Saakie who is also an electrical engineer for their to know their drive and motivation for the younger women who aspire to go into TVET.

The CTVET 3rd edition Women In TVET Conference was organised by WUSC EUMC, Ministry of Education, WEE-NORTH in partnership with Canada and the INVEST IN HER project.

Key dignitaries that were present at this year's conference included Deputy Minister of Education in charge of TVET, Hon. Gifty Twum-Ampofo, Director General of CTVET, Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, Reps for the Canadian High Commission, Country Director for World University Service of Canada(WUSC) who doubles as the Project Manager for the INVEST project, Mrs. Appiah Wiafe-Adofo.

This year's event focused on how technology can drive gender equality in technical and Vocational education and training. The program presented the commission with the opportunity to launch the Trade Profiles and Industry Attachment manual.
