The Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service has arrested 10 suspected drug peddlers from various ‘wee’ ghettoes at Asasetre, Esiama and Kikam in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.

A 25-year-old physically challenged woman was among the suspected drug-peddlers.

They have been put before court and subsequently remanded.

A search in their ghettoes revealed 17 compressed parcels of dried leaves, 129 wrappers and nine quantities of seeds and dried leaves, all suspected to be Indian hemp, and some paraphernalia believed to be used in the narcotic business.

The pleas of the suspects were not taken when they appeared before a Takoradi Circuit Court presided over by His Honour Kwesi Boakye yesterday.

They were however remanded into police custody to reappear on August 23, 2011 after being charged with possessing narcotic drugs.

Briefing DAILY GUIDE on the swoop, Western Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ransford Ninson, said the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, on Wednesday, August 17, 2011, visited ‘wee’ ghettoes at Esiama and met a number of young men dealing in narcotic drugs.

The men however took to their heels upon seeing the police approaching.

The police managed to arrest Matthew Joe Ofori, 20; Joseph Ezo, 25; Isaac Kojo, 17; Kofi Acheampong, 51 and 50-year-old Francis Acquah Nda.

When they were searched the suspected Indian hemp was found.

The regional police boss intimated that the unit then moved to Asasetre and arrested suspects Yawson Kudzo, 55 and Felix Yankson, 21.

A search conducted in their drinking bar revealed 17 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Suspect Yawson Kudzro admitted ownership of the exhibit and stated that he got his regular supply from the Brong Ahafo region.

When the unit finally called at Kikam, suspects Alu Ekyi, 29 and Dominic Kwabena, 36, were arrested together with a 25-year-old cripple with some quantity of leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

DCOP Ninson told DAILY GUIDE that the unit accordingly brought the 10 suspected drug peddlers to the Western Regional Police Command in Sekondi, where they were being processed for court.
