Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, has welcomed President John Evans Atta Mills call for a non-partisan approach in solving the flood situation in the country; saying its the right way to go.
President John Atta Mills, moved by reports of havoc caused by several hours of heavy rain in Accra and Tema overnight, on Wednesday began a tour of the affected areas to assess the extent of damage and to sympathize with the victims. On his tour, he called for a non-partisan approach to solving the disaster that had confronted the whole nation.
President Mills expressed concern about building on water-ways and indiscriminate disposal of waste and stressed the need for more discipline in that respect. He said the authorities do not seek pleasure in the demolition of buildings sited on water-ways, explaining that the attitude and actions of perpetrators necessitated those actions.
Speaking in an interview with Shamima Muslim on Citi FM, Nana Akufo Addo, who is currently out of the country, lauded President Mills for his all-embracing talk, adding that it is nigh time people come together and solve issues which will promote development in the country.
I am happy towards the end of his mandate hes talking about a non-partisan approach to the resolving of issues; many of us have thought that it is long overduewe are ready to respond to such an appeal. After all, the welfare of our people is paramountnot necessarily scoring political point. I welcome it and I say that its the right way to go, he said.
Asked if a Nana Addo presidency will be willing to support a difficult decision of demolishing and relocation, to avoid such disasters, he said: that is the whole point of leadershipwe come into office to deal with both soft and hard issuesif that is what is required to be done, then Yes an Akufo Addo presidency will support that, he said.
