About 100 residents of Nwanta near Kyekyewere in the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality, have been displaced following the destruction of 20 mud houses due to continuous rainfall since Monday June 3.
Although no death has been recorded, properties worth GHȼ100,000 had been lost.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the Municipal National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Coordinator, Mr. Kenneth Mensah said around 1430 hours on Monday, his office received information that the entire Nwanta Township had been flooded.
He said when they got to the town investigation conducted showed the increasing activities of galamsey operators (illegal miners) in the area contributed largely to the flooding.
The NADMO Coordinator said the illegal miners had blocked all the water bodies within the town.
The affected victims are presently living with their friends and relatives in nearby villages.
Mr Mensah said he had forwarded his report on the matter to the Assembly to enable them to take the necessary action against the illegal miners.
He assured the affected victims that NADMO would come to their aid.
