President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that he is unaware of the strike action being embarked on by the nurses of the Accra Psychiatric hospital.
The president who was speaking on Sunrise radio in the Eastern region on Tuesday told the host, he was yet to be informed about the current impasse that has compelled management of the largest specialized mental health hospital to discharge three hundred patients to safeguard the woeful situation.
The disclosure of the president comes after the nurses served a two week notice of strike prior to the industrial action which was carried out on Monday.
The nurses complain they are reeling under unsafe working conditions over non availability of drugs for mentally deranged patients coupled with inadequate logistics and hospital consumables.
President Mahama however explained the need for Ghana to pay keen attention to mental health because of the vulnerability of each individual in society to find him or herself in a state of insanity.
“No it has not come to my attention, but I do know that the area of mental health is one of the areas that we need to focus attention. Our psychiatrists tell us that all of us have a bit of madness in us and that somehow we all have some mental disorder or the other. It means that it is something that we need to pay attention to. We passed the mental health bill and government is committed to its implementation,” President Mahama went on and on.
“We will take immediate steps to resolve the issue at the Accra psychiatric hospital and I am going to call the minister of health after this programme to see what the issues are and see how we will resolve them,” he assured.
This however paints a bleak picture as to the seriousness and the urgency with which a quick solution could be sought for the displeased nurses at the Accra Psychiatric hospital and persons seeking healthcare from the hospital.

In fact I am highly disappointed in you. I regret voting for you.
So what are you aware of. No wonder, your chief of staff is in the campaign platform. This is how Ghana is being ruled. Important issue like this happens and you are not aware? Ei, the Nsawam bomb blast too you are not aware. IS THIS THE DISCIPLE OF I CARE FOR YOU? Within one week, president has made two serious disappointing statements. Is he running away from the truth( failure) Or someone is not doing his work? Sack the ff people who are supposed to give you information.Omane Boama, security capo, chief of staff because trust me those statements will cost you.Ogidibam!
SOMETHING HAPPENS IN ACCRA AND YOU DON'T HEAR ONLY TO BE TOLD IN KOFORIDUA. BY THE WAY, WHEN BAWUMIAH DAILY TELLS YOU YOU ARE ARE INCOMPETENT WHO BRIEFS YOU? WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP LIKE AT THE SEAT OF GOVERNMENT? VERY SAD INDEED.
Mr. President, you can hear all the insults the opposition party rain on you but not the problems of the aggrieved nurses, for that matter Ghana problems. This issue has been in the headlines for the past 2 weeks and I find it very difficult for you Mr. President to plead ignorance. I can't think far ampa.
Me I'm tired of defending u. U make things so difficult for some of us to defend u now adays. Sometimes I feel like something is wrong somewhere. Don't think I will vote for u this time
I feel very hate to read comment like yours, trying to defend the indefensible . Massa this problem at the Accra Psychiatic Accra Hospital did not started just yesterday. I remember the Chief Of Staff Mr. Julius Dabrah, AMA Boss and even the Minister of Health and Minister of Employment Haruna Idrisu have all been there, to see the state of the problem and have even promised the hospital the problem will be solved, so for the President to say, he knows nothing and have not heard about the strike definitly exposed John Mahama is indeed an INCOMPETENT, Uslesss president ever in Gh.
EH,WHAT TYPE PRESIDENT DO WE HAVE,A FATHER WHO CANNOT PUT HIS CHILDREN IN ORDER IS IRRESPONSIBLE FATHER, WE NEED RESPONSIBLE FATHER, LEADER, AND PRESIDENT.WE NOW KNOW YOU THAT YOU CANNOT LEAD US AGAIN MR PRESIDENT,BECAUSE YOU HAVE ON IDEAR WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND YOU. Oh massage. Why do you always make it difficult to defend you. Do you mean you do not even listen to news? Those people talk about you being incompetent and you always seem To be proving them right with your utterance. Even if your minister of health has not briefed you, your aids are around, what is the use of chief of staff. Massa, you are making things difficult for us. At least show some sort of competence.
The President needs to be briefed and if he has not being briefed why do you fault him. Chain of Command is the State of Government so we must wait.
