Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem constituency in the Western Region and a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy, Hon. George Mireku Duker, has hinted that he will soon launch an apprenticeship fund to support the youth in his constituency who would want to go into apprenticeship.
According to him, all the necessary arrangements and modalities for accessing the apprenticeship fund has been finalised and will be officially launched in his first 100 days in office.
Hon. Duker made the disclosure in an exclusive interview with Today in his office at the plush Job 600 building – Parliament House in Accra.
When he was quizzed on the rationale behind the fund, the Tarkwa-Nsuaem MP responded that he wanted to empower most of the youth in his constituency through skills development.
“I am setting up this fund to provide financial and material support for the teeming youth who desire to acquire some employable skills but do not have the financial strength to go through the three (3) year apprenticeship,” he added.
According to him, monies accrued from the fund will be used in providing beneficiaries with tools, sewing machines, head and hand dryers, manicure and pedicure machines as well as apprenticeship fees which is a challenge to many.
Hon. Duker explained that the best way to empower the youth is to give them quality employable skills training and orientation to make them competitive across the globe.
In addition after the training, they will become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to the local and as well as the national economy.
“Some of the areas I am focusing on are sewing, hairdressing, carpentry, masonry, mechanic tec. In the meantime, I am targeting about 150 people for the first year,” he revealed.
The Tarkwa-Nsuaem MP opined that there are other initiatives which he will roll out soon to improve the lives of his constituents.
