Six police officers have been summoned to the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) Bureau of the Ghana Police Service to answer charges of misconduct.
The six, who are all stationed at the Sekondi Police Regional headquarters, were caught on video collecting money from drivers at the Inchaban Barrier.
The Director-General of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr David Eklu, told the Daily Graphic that when the attention of the Ghana Police Service was drawn to the video, which had gone viral on social media, personnel of the PIPS were tasked to investigate the authenticity of the video.
He said a team was dispatched to Inchaban where the police personnel were identified and invited to appear before the PIPS in Accra this week for interrogation.
He, however, declined to mention the identities of the affected personnel.
Unprofessional conduct
Mr Eklu made it clear that unprofessional conduct by police personnel went against the vision of the Ghana Police Service to be a world-class police service.
He reminded motorists that they were not obliged to give money to police officers on barrier duties or at any other duty point.
“As part of the measures to discourage police officers from taking money from drivers, clear guidelines will soon be given to distinguish the duties of the various police officers at barriers, police officers on highway patrol duties, and police officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD),” he stated.
Mr Eklu said it was the resolve of the police administration not to shield any police officer who indulged in acts of unprofessionalism that were likely to bring the name of the police service into disrepute.

the ghana police do not have any integrity left. how can a cocaine get lost in the custody of the police and till date, we have not seen it. it is all corruption galore.
This officer should give us a break of this "white washing" statement he is putting out there. Who does not know that Ghanaian police is corrupt...
GHANA POLICE IS ONE OF THE DISGRACEFUL POLICE INSTITUTIONS ON THE GLOBE. YOU CAN NEVER THINK OF BRIBING A POLICE IN AMERICA AND MANY NATIONS. IT IS NOT LIKE THAT IN GHANA. GHANA POLICE IS IDENTIFIED WITH BRIBERY. HOW CAN GHANA SUCCEED TO FIGHT CORRUPTION WHEN THE VERY INSTITUTION NEEDED TO DO THE TASK IS SO HEAVILY CORRUPT? IF AKUFFO ADDO IS SERIOUS TO FIGHT CORRUPTION THEN HE MUST CHALLENGE THE IGP TO WEED UP CORRUPTION IN THE POLICE SERVICE.
I have an accident case with a Apam police and the officer is demanding money before the chief commander will sign the accident report, is 2 month now and the report hasn't been signed because I refuse to pay the bribe Please I need PIPS address or contacts
I am surprised at the police chief. Drivers have been in this situation for a very long time. I once asked a driver why they give out money to police and he said a police man can just stop u and just charge you with an offence and bcos most of them are illiterate they quickly pay the money to have their freedom to work bcos if u the driver proofs stubborn and u are taken to court what the police man will say is what the judge will use to jail, remand or pay a fine. So they will stop the court process on the street to avoid wasting time and money since if the case should get to the court.
This is bad reputation for the Ghana police service. This act has been going on for years and until the culprits serve jail time or some other form of harsh punishment it won't prevent others from engaging in this act. Please bring these guys to book. They should be kicked of the police service and made to do time in jail for their unscrupulous behavior.
Why is the police chief pretending this is a new thing? This is the normal, everyday life of the police service. As we speak, police officers are still extorting money from drivers across the country. They shouldn't pretend to be unaware.
IGP,PLs come to Tema beach road and comm 3, the new china habor or what ever, you see your police officers using de area as their cocoa farm. stopping and extortion galore of both privates and container cars.
Both the police officers and the drivers should be punished to serve as deterrence to other would be offenders.
