First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo has received $18,000 to support her work as the premier ambassador of Ghana for HIV advocacy, elimination of mother-to-child HIV transmission, keeping mothers alive and the empowerment of young women and adolescent girls.

The money presented by the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Shi Ting Wang, would be used to implement initiatives of the Ghana AIDS Commission aimed at further controlling the diseases among the specific target group.

Making the donation, H.E. Wang said, “The fight against HIV and AIDS is a key focus for China-Africa cooperation under the framework of the Forum on China Africa Cooperation. In this regard, China has sent medical teams to more than 40 African countries and provided anti-HIV drugs, medical equipment and materials for free.”

Mrs. Akufo- Addo called for increased actions to combat HIV and AIDs and charged the Ghana AIDS Commission and all organisations and institutions involved in the fight against AIDS to collaborate more effectively to stop new infections to achieve zero transmission.

It could be recalled that in September this year, H.E. Prof. Peng Liyuan, wife of H.E. President Xi Jinping, and other spouses of states leaders of African member countries of FOCAC, including H.E. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, met on the margins of the FOCAC Beijing Summit, to jointly launch the China-Africa HIV advocacy campaign and gave the assurance that the Chinese government would continue to work in collaboration with Africa to ensure that the HIV/AIDS menace is reduced to the barest minimum.
