The police in Kumasi have arrested a man who allegedly murdered a cabbie and ran away with his vehicle.

The suspect, Benjamin Arthur, who drove the car, with registration number AS-932-19, to Kasoa in the Central Region, was traced to his hideout through the tracking device which was installed on the car.

The police said the alleged murder and robbery occurred  at Brofoyedru, a suburb of Kumasi, on September 29, this year.

Briefing

At a press briefing in Kumasi on Tuesday, October 15, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Kwasi Mensah Duku, said Arthur hired the deceased’s taxi from Breman, a suburb of Kumasi, and asked to be sent to Brofoyedru on the Kumasi-Anwhiankwanta road.

On reaching Atwima Dida, the suspect, who is also known as Kofi Nkrumah and Hope Arthur Ebenezer, shot the driver twice in the chest, killing him instantly, and drove the car to Kasoa in the Central Region.

Mr Duku said luck, however, eluded him when the car was traced to Kasoa with the aid of the tracking device, leading to his arrest.

He said during police interrogation, Arthur mentioned one Erasmus Adama Nketiah, alias Alhaji Adama, as his accomplice.

The commander said an accomplice of the suspect was currently on the run and being sought for by the police.

The taxi has since been retrieved and is in police custody.

Advice

Mr Duku advised taxi drivers not be lured by profit to undertake trips that would endanger their lives.

He asked them to be suspicious of long-distance trips at night.

Related development

In a related development, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested two suspected armed robbers for robbing a businesswoman at Ohwim New Site in Kumasi of $16,000 and an unspecified amount in cedis.

COP Duku gave the names of the suspects as Bismark Fosu and George Boateng who, together with three other accomplices currently on the run, also robbed the victim of a pump action gun and one laptop.

According to the police, the incident happened on September 29, 2019 and explained that the suspects had earlier, about 3:30 a.m.  on September 27, 2019, broken into a house at Abrepo, where they held the residents hostage, inflicted machete wounds on them and robbed them of a pump action gun.

On October 8, this year, acting on police intelligence, the suspects were arrested at Ohwim, where the pump action gun and two industrial cutters were retrieved from them.
