MTN Ghana on Wednesday presented items and a cheque for GH¢2,000 to Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharabutu, National Chief Imam, towards the celebration of Eid-ul- Fitr as part of its corporate social responsibility.
The items included GH¢500 MTN airtime, soft drinks, three bags of rice, two gallons of vegetable oil, a ram and assorted MTN souvenirs.
In addition, MTN donated GH¢1,000 cash, five crates of soft drinks and MTN souvenirs to the Ayawaso Council of Zongo Chiefs towards a street carnival as part of the celebration.
Mr Abubakar Mohammed, Branch Network Service Senior Manager of MTN, said MTN recognised the importance of Muslims and would continue to support and complement the efforts of Muslims in the country.
He said the relevance of Eid-ul-Fitr could not be over-emphasized because it offered important lessons in giving and building relationship, which was part of MTN values and practices being up-held and identified with.
Mr Abubakar noted that the period taught Muslims to live in harmony with their neighbours and the crucial role tolerance and unity played in the development of not only the Muslim community, but the entire nation.
He appreciated the efforts of chiefs and Muslims for their constant support of businesses, which had contributed significantly to maintain MTN as the leader in the telecom industry in the country.
Mr Abubakar said MTN recently introduced some new services including the MTN 1188 Directory Service, which provided the contact information of over 30,000 institutions and companies in the country, saying “By dialing 1188, one can have access to company's phone details within a minute".
“An attractive Akwaaba package awaits all those who are yet to join the MTN network within the next 120 days and new subscribers will enjoy the first minute of calls initiated daily for free”.
Sheikh Sharubutu said the Holy Quran was revealed to mankind in the month of Ramadan and that all good things done during the month would be rewarded in abundance, especially the last 10 days of the fasting, adding “If you give, Allah doubles it in return”.
He said for the past five years, MTN had supported him to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr and expressed appreciation to their efforts and prayed for the management and staff.
Sheikh Sharubutu noted that during the administration of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, religious bodies in the country and Ghanaians enjoyed peace and unity and showed appreciation to Allah for the prevailing peace in the country.
He prayed for President John Dramani Mahama to continue with the good works of the late President Mills and thanked MTN for their support.
Sheikh Sharubutu prayed for a peaceful Election 2012 and appealed to Ghanaians to co-operate with the Electoral Commission and other stakeholders for successful elections.
