Elijah Homadzie, a 4-year-old pupil of the Good Better Best school at Amasaman, a suburb of Accra, experienced perhaps his darkest day on 13th August 2009, when his left arm was completely severed off and his right foot badly damaged.
How? Through an alleged train accident.
Elijah is born to Veronica Segla, a farmer and resident of Amasaman, and Mr. Homadzie, a resident of the Volta Region.
The fateful day began with a request by a neighbour of the victims mum, Mary, that Elijah accompanies her to Papaase in Nsawam, to visit her uncle.
Unfortunately, Mary returned to Amasaman in an ambulance which was on its way to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital with poor Elijah in a very critical condition.
According to the victims mum, when she got to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, she realized that the son was now a physically challenged person.
What Happened?
Narrating what led to the unfortunate incident, Mary revealed that Elijah fell off a moving train and as a result, his left arm was completely ripped off and right foot terribly damaged. She returned the severed limb to the victims mother (Veronica), the following day.
But a clearly distraught Veronica finds it extremely hard to comprehend the scenario.
According to Veronica (the victims mother), Marys (her neighbour) husband preferred that no legal action was taken by her (Veronica) and promised to foot the medical bills of little Elijah. However, she said, on second thought, she reported the incident to the Amasaman Police and after the arrest of Mary, her husband ceased to pay for Elijahs medical bills.
Veronica is now left to wonder about her neighbours non-sentimental attitude towards the plight of her son.
Elijah Homadzie has meanwhile, been discharged from the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital but is undergoing a series of medical check-ups.
He (4year old Elijah) and his family is crying out loud for justice to serve its cause.
