The Tarkwa Nsueam Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) has recorded 157 accident cases on the Tarkwa ďż˝ Takoradi Highway with 44 deaths between January and December.
The Divisional Commander of MTTU, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Emmanuel Honu-Broni, attributed the increases in road accidents to over speeding, the sharp curves and the unmarked portion of the road from Nsueam to Tarkwa.
On the issue of the unmarked portion of the road, he said it was discussed at the Divisional Security level and the meeting was told because of the poor construction of the road by the previous contractor the case is pending in court.
He said because the road had not been properly handed over to the government of Ghana it had not been marked, adding that when a road is unmarked it becomes dark, dangerous and unsafe to drive at night.
ASP Honu-Broni said though they had carried out lot of educational programmes on radio and at lorry parks in Tarkwa, Bogoso and Wassa Akropong, accident cases keep on increasing due this problem.
He said as Christmas is approaching his police personnel would be working together with the road safety committees and other stakeholders to work towards reducing road accidents.
ASP Honu-Broni appealed to the authorities in the municipality to do something about the markings in the interim before the court delivers judgment.
