Dr Ronald Sowah, Western Regional HIV and AIDs Focal Person, has expressed worry over the tendency of some spiritual leaders to detain HIV and AIDS patients at prayer camps instead of referring them to hospitals.
The situation, he said is a major challenge in reducing the death rate among patients and in controlling the disease, adding that some patients only access quality healthcare at the end stage of the virus.
Dr Sowah told Ghana News Agency during a facility visit to the Comprehensive Health Care Centre at Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, built to offer total health care to persons living with the disease.
Clinics are run on Wednesdays with two medical doctors, seven nurses, two pharmacists and nutrition officers on duty.
Dr Sowah said the Region has 21 Anti- Retroviral Treatment sites and 126 Prevention of Mother to Children Transmission points.
