General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, says he is "dumbfounded" by Stephen Asamoah Boateng’s opposition to the party’s nationwide Thank You Tour.
The NPP is embarking on the tour to thank its members in all the ten regions of the country in appreciation for their support during the hearing of the landmark 2012 presidential election petition at the Supreme Court.
The Thank You Tour is being led by party Chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey supported by NPP 2012 vice presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie also known as Sir John, and National Women's Organizer, Otiko Afisa Djaba.
But the former Information Minister under the erstwhile Kufuor administration, Asamoah Boateng, claims the party’s national executives are clandestinely campaigning to retain their positions ahead of NPP’s upcoming delegates’ congress.
However, a livid Sir John on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Tuesday said Asamoah Boateng is a "hypocrite" .
According to him, the former Information Minister has no moral right to question the rationale behind the thank you tour because he [Asamoah Boateng] has been very "dishonest" to the party.
Sir John alleged that at the time the party was challenging the 2012 elections in court, Asamoah Boateng was busily campaigning for his preferred candidate for the party's Chairmanship position.
He maintained that the national executives until March 2014 when their tenure ends, would be committed to ensuring NPP comes to power in 2016.
The NPP General Secretary added that there is no iota of truth in the claims by Asamoah Boateng and thus he claim should be treated with the contempt it deserves.
Sir John maintained that NPP in its bid to regain power in 2016 will not tolerate any person or group of persons who will create division in the party for their parochial interest.
Meanwhile, Sir John has confirmed to supporters during the tour in Northern Ghana that he will go for reelection.
