President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his government's commitment to construct over 200 Senior High Schools in various communities to boost the nation's education system.
Addressing questions from senior journalists in the country as part of his first year in office, President Mahama disclosed that plans are underway to undertake the first phase of the project this year.
According to him, the Education Ministry under the behest of the sector Minister, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, has commissioned the architectural plans intended to commence the project as promised by his government.
He indicated during the forum that "in the course of this year, the technical team came out with the criteria for deciding where the schools should be sited. And the first criteria was to site a Secondary School in all the new districts that they have created that were without Secondary Schools. The next criteria was to site Secondary Schools in all districts that did not have Secondary Schools. And the third was to identify districts in which they already have Secondary Schools but the pressure for Secondary education was high.”
Fifty Secondary Schools will be established in various vicinities and construction of the second phase of the project which will see another fifty Day Community Secondary Schools built will all commence this year, 2014; President Mahama said.
“The Ministry has also commissioned the drawing of the architectural plans which have done. Models of the schools have been produced and displayed…This year we going to start with the first fifty but we are also going to start with the second fifty. So, we intended to start work on two batches of fifty Community day Secondary Schools this year."
He assured Ghanaians that his government is "on track to deliver on that promise and it’s commitment to be made. And I am committed to ensuring that we increase access for Secondary education for our children.”
