Professor Mike Oquaye, former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, and a leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Thursday declined offers from some NPP members to contest the partys chairmanship race.
In a statement to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Prof Oquaye, former Minister of the Gospel in charge of the Charity Baptist Church at Dzowulu in Accra, said he prefers to use his position as a member of the NPP National Council of Elders to support the party.
The former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya said I am going to use my position as member of the National Council of Elders, to offer advice, caution, advocate for peace and direct in any way to help resolve conflicts, so as to help steer the Party in the right direction.
Prof. Oquaye said, he will help whoever emerges as winner in the subsequent contest with his advice, and work closely with the person to secure victory in election 2016.
He, therefore, pleaded with members of the NPP to keep their eyes on the ball for election 2016.
