Ashanti NPP Ready For Mahama

THE OPPOSITION New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the weekend hit back at the National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing the ruling party’s assertion that it would win one million votes in the Ashanti Region in the 2016 presidential election, as a “desperate and over-ambitious dream.”

According to the NPP, the vain hope of President John Dramani Mahama and his NDC government would remain unfulfilled as the party was determined to work assiduously to win the mandate of Ghanaians to bring about economic freedom and prosperity to the citizens.
Addressing a special delegates’ conference of the party in Kumasi, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, slammed President Mahama for his mismanagement of the country’s resources.

He described the President’s assertion to win one million votes from the NPP’s Ashanti stronghold as a mere joke, and called on the party supporters to be on the lookout for foreigners who might attempt to register when the Electoral Commission embarks on the limited registration.

Mr. Antwi-Boasiako, popularly called ‘Chairman Wontumi’ again called for prayers to be said for the NPP leadership and the unity of the party, while urging members to do away with divisive tendencies that would court disaffection for the ‘elephant family.’

The conference saw the election five prominent members by popular acclamation to the party’s National Council as representatives of the Ashanti Regional – after three other nominees had withdrawn their candidatures at the eleventh hour.

The elected were Maxwell Kofi Jumah, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa Constituency; Kwame Osei Prempeh, former MP for Nsuta-Kwaman-Beposo; Robert Yaw Amankwa, former Ashanti Regional Chairman; Dr. Kwame Amoako Tuffuor, former head of School Feeding Programme and Janet Anane, a businesswoman.

Fredrick Fredua Anto, former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, who is currently the National Third Vice Chairman, moved the motion for the voting by voice, which was seconded by Yaro Jocob, the Atwima Mponua Constituency Secretary of the NPP.

Mr. Anto encouraged members of the party to work hard for victory as it “remains the best bet for Ghanaians who have lost confidence in the present political leadership of the country.”

He cautioned against self-destructiveness and plain insults that were creeping into the party.

According to him, members of the National Executive were prepared to give their support to any of the aspirants who would emerge winner at the presidential primary and called on supporters not to indulge in name calling and casting of insinuations through the media.

Mr. Osei Prempeh, on behalf of his colleagues, pledged their unflinching commitment to teaming up with the leaders of the party to work toward the NPP’s dream of annexing political power in the next general elections.
