A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Asamoah Gyamfi, has stated that the party will save more funds if the other three candidates vying for the presidential candidate slot step down voluntarily.
He explained that decision by Alan Kyeremanten, the main contender to the partys two-time presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, to still vie for the NPPs flagbearership position will amount to nothing since he knows quite well that he cannot be victorious.
If you critically study the upcoming congress [NPP October 18, National Delegates Congress], Alans votes at the just ended super delegate congress shows clearly that, he is not the partys favourite anymore. He got only 59 votes out of the 740. What worries me is that, the congress will just be a waste of money, he said
Adding that, The party will pool more resources together to push its national campaign ahead of the 2016 general elections if the three candidates drop out of the race.
Akufo-Addo polled 598 votes representing 80.81% in a NPP Super Delegates Congress aimed at pruning down to five, the seven aspirants who wish to lead the party in the 2016 general elections.
Alan Kyeremanten, his main contender, polled 7.97% of total votes cast. He only obtained 59 votes out of 740 ballots cast.
Speaking in an interview with Peacefmonline.com, the NPP leading member opined that, monies [if any] allocated for the congress should rather be used for the national campaign in 2016.
The contest at the upcoming congress is totally useless. The congress must come one to just endorse Nana Addo not to contest him, he said.
He further questioned that, Do we [NPP] want a flagbearer or we want power? Adding that, If we want power, then we need money.
Alan has the constitutional right to contest. But there is no way he can beat Nana Addothe party has made up its mind so the earlier he throws in the towel, it will be better for him and his political future. He [Alan] should step down and use that money for his campaign to help NPP win power. That is more important to the party, he added.
