A deputy communications director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Anthony Abayifaa Karbo has described chiefs who engage themselves in active politics as “opportunists”.
According to him, their involvement in politics is not anything new – “They [Chiefs] have been in active politics since the colonial time. We can’t blame them so no one should insult them.”
Karbo joined the recent debate over the participation of chiefs and traditional leaders in active politics considering the provision of Article 276 Clause 1 of the 1992 constitution which states that, “A chief shall not take part in active party politics; and any chief wishing to do so and seeking election to Parliament shall abdicate his stool or skin”.
That came after the chief of Kukurantumi is reported to have declared a fifty percent vote for President Mahama come 2016.
Another chief from Sunyani, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri also guaranteed that the people of the Brong Ahafo region will give the President 80 percent of the total votes.
Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show dubbed 'Ghana Montie', the Lawra constituency aspiring NPP MP, Anthony Abayifaa Karbo stated that the – “chiefs in active politics cannot be trusted”.
“You can trust them, they just praised the president because of his presence.” He added
Describing President Mahama as a mellowed politician, he said – “The president even don’t trust the chiefs. He has been as politician for a long time and knows how these chiefs are. They have sweet talks but can let you down.”
