The creation of a ministry for railways development by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is superfluous, the former deputy minister of transport, Joyce Bawa-Mogtari has said.
President Nana Akufo-Addo argued the creation of the portfolio will transform the sector. He thus nominated the Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, Joe Ghartey as its Minister-designate.
But Mrs. Bawa-Mogtari thought otherwise, stating during an interview on Accra-based Class FM Thursday that the ministry could have been placed “under the ministry of Transport.”
She went further to explain that the move was not economically viable as there are only two companies serving directly in the sector; the Railways Development Authority and the Railway Company Limited.
“I do hope that there is a good reason [for creating the new ministry] other than just creating jobs for appointees or jobs for people,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Railway Workers Union welcomed the creation of the Ministry.
According to its Secretary, Goodwill Ntamah, the move would create loads of jobs for Ghanaians.
“…The president has done well with the creation of the railway ministry. The minister who has also been designated knows much about the sector, he knows the history and the challenges confronting the sector and the workers. We the workers of the railways know him very well and, so, I am happy that he is the one who has been designated to handle the sector,” he said.

MY HOPE IN THE NANA ADMINISTRATION JUST INCREASED THE DAY I READ IN THE NEWS ABOUT THE CREATION OF THE RAILWAY MINISTRY. THIS IS ONE OF THE WAYS TO MAKE AN IMPACT IN THE LIFE OF THE ORDINARY GHANAIAN (ESP. THOSE IN THE RURAL AREAS). THE COLLAPSE OF THE RAILWAY TRANSPORT SYSTEM COLLAPSED MOST OF OUR VILLAGES LEADING TO AN INCREASE IN RURAL URBAN MIGRATION. THOSE THAT HAVE ONCE LIVED IN A VILLAGE WOULD UNDERSTAND ME BETTER. GOOD JOB DONE. WE HAVE YOUR BACK, H.E. NANA ADDO DANKWA AKUFFO ADDO
Anybody who knows about a country's economic development will agree that the railway system is a very component. An effective Railway system opens up the country and enables people to move en mass with their products. In Europe and elsewhere, the railway system is the most used.Ghana has to quickly pay attention to that.A permanent Minister will secure that.
Animaaaaaaal,go away
Not economically viable, just two companies in the sector.... And that is the reason why the vision is for an appointed time, though it tarried, wait for it, it shall surely come, it will not delay. Ghana is in the best hands for the next 4 years and as surely as the battle is the Lord's, Ghana is moving forward with vision, competence, intelligence, potential and a can do spirit and attitude for 4 years and beyond. The VISION is here!!!!
Cus Mrs bawa was not able to do anything as a minister nor to even have the technical now how to help in her position she find an appointment position of another ministry to be ***barred word*** which I will say she was ***barred word*** to Ghana's. She only came to spend our money as the other NDC ministers did
OH !!!!!!MADAM BAWA !!!!!!; THIS NDC PARTY HAVE REALLY DESTROYED YOUR THINKING FACULTY!!!!! OF THINKING STRATEGICALLY !!!!! ; NANA ADDO IS THINKING STRATEGICALLY : CAN YOU IMAGINE A DEVELOPED RAILWAY NETWORK BETWEEN TEMA -KUMASI- TAMALE TO BURKINA; CHINA ; INDIA ; EUROPE : US HAVE DEVELOPED THE RAILWAY SYSTEM AND THIS HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THESE COUNTERIES ;It does not Matter if there are only two ministeries ; the develoment of Railway net work is a must not the award of contracts and over invoicing by your cousin Jon Mahama .
Is needless to you Madam but Ghanaians we appreciate it. Governance is about planning and not building Dubai.
Shut the fuck up
Joyce you may not understand why those ministries are set up but very soon you will understand and appreciate the result. The issue is not about jobs for the boys but how those areas will be substantively taking care off. if it was job for the boys the president would have planned to fix them somewhere any way. So Joyce the president wants to give much attention to these areas so having a substantive Minister will help him focus in these areas. You were the Deputy Minister for transport, how much attention was given to the railways sector? it was some view months to election and you just went to fix some rails and put chippings on the Secondi-Takoradi railway to deceive us as if you have developed the Western Corridor railways. Azaaa people. Why did your government divide The Energy sector into 2 and we had Ministry of energy and Mistry of Power.
