Minister designate for Gender and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba has written a letter giving further explanations on why she didn't do her national service.
The issues of national service was among several issues that were raised when the Minister designate appeared before the Appointment Committee of Parliament.
Currently, all the Minority legislators on the Appointments Committee are against Ms Djaba’s approval citing her inability to undertake her national service as well as for her posture during her vetting.
Debating the issues on the floor of parliament on Friday, February 3, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu said: “She does not have our support and she will not have our support until she behaves in a manner befitting a minister.”
In a letter addressed to the chairman of the Committee, Otiko said: "I wish to explain further that I did not undertake National Service upon completion of a course of study at the University of Development Studies (UDS), Wa Campus, in 2009, because I was informed that persons who were over forty (40) years of age were exempted from national service," she stated in the letter.

Dear Sir,
FURTHER EXPLANATION ON NON-PARTICIPATION IN NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME
I am writing to clarify responses I gave in answer to a question posed to me about my national service during my appearance at the Appointments Committee, as part of the vetting processes to assume the office of Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
I wish to explain further that I did not undertake National Service upon completion of a course of study at the University of Development Studies (UDS), Wa Campus, in 2009, because I was informed that persons who were over forty (40) years of age were exempt from national service.
I completed UDS in 2009 at the age of 47, and consequently, was under the impression that I was exempt from national service.
As a Ghanaian patriot, who has worked in the most inhospitable parts of Ghana like the Sissala District for over six years, and provided various services to my nation in many other fields of endeavour, it would be inconceivable that I would deliberately abstain serving my nation.
I hope that this explanation would inform your decision in respect of my non-participation in the National Service Scheme upon completion of UDS in 2009.
Yours faithfully,
Otiko Djaba
Minister-Designate
Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection

Otiko has no idea of our culture and simply do not deserve the post. Is she staying with a man? It is obvious she loves Mahama but Mahama rejected the fine arranged marriage by their parents because of this same behavior. Her action is because she could not marry the man she really love and wanted to marry. Please don't hold it so much against her blame that thing called love.
BOGUS EXPLANATION AND IT OBLY ***barred word*** WHO WUD ACCEPT THIS.
can the minority remember 2009,the vetting of Fiifi Kwartey. His rudeness to the committee. Now talking about Madam Otiko, revisit the tape and see the posture of questioneer Okudjato, his behavior or altitude towards the woman.
Otiko is very brave and that is why she should be approved. How can anyone think of a 47 year old single mother with 4 children do national service on that meager salary. Do we want them to starve. She was plain and said it as it was. Someone who wanted to take a house meant for our vice president and also want to steal money from the new house being built. SHAME JOHN MAHAMA AND NDC
Psychologically you dont qualify to hold any position of authority in ghana. Your behavior in public is ample demonstration of the devil you are in private
I will plead with the minority to approve of madam Otiko's nomination for her to turn the northern part of the country into paradise since she feels so passionate about that area. I believe if she team up with the president, the place will be like heaven very soon.
@Bruno, how do you understand the word arrogant? Any one who speaks his or her mind and is confident is perceived to be arrogant. It is so sad. You think people who portray shyness are always humble? Allow us move us our nation forward. Stay in your corner and be a coward
My sister, is not about the National Service but the NDC have a problem with your issue with the ex-President. If its about National service why did they approve of Ayorkor Botwe? I never knew the NDC people know insults should be avoided in politics. Otiko used those words on Mahama because of the negative approached used on SADA. The way she was expressing herself you could see how passionate she was for SADA and how she felt it was an opportunity for the government to use to develop the 3 Northern regions especially the President being a Northerner as well. I was critically watching her and you could see that she was really in pain and wished some positive things could have been done through SADA for her people. I really admired her and noted she is really a concerned mother. Having said that, how many times has Nana Addo not received insults from the the NDC caucus. To the extend of saying that he killed his wife. How do they espect his children to feel.To extend of saying that he is cursed and can never be a president. Nana Addo tops all politicians who have severely received insults. As for Mahama he had things more than easier. Can they retract those insults.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm,i think she is not cultured, thats y she couldnt stay with a man,how can an arrogant ***barred word*** like her get a husband.
all those people who hurled insults at otiko you are now crying because your so called ex presidents is disrespected... you can curse all you want but it comes back to you and your unborn generation at least if our unborn generation will not hold such positions and defile that seat so be it. we don't want presidents who go around impregnating celebrities...***barred word*** entities
