It has now been established that the board of Ghana Oil Company (GOIL), slipped up for hastily accusing President Akufo-Addo of side-stepping the due process in removing and appointing a Chief Executive Officer for the oil company.
The Board Chairman, Prof. William Asumaning, was in the news recently for the wrong reasons when he took a subtle dig at the appointing authority following news of the appointment of a new head at GOIL.
The faux pas had to do with a statement he personally signed without cross-checking the veracity of the news report.
“The Board would like to draw the attention of....that GOIL is a public listed company on the Ghana Stock Exchange with its own Regulations. The Regulations state the process through which a CEO can be appointed or removed....The Board would like to state emphatically that it is not aware of the observance of such processes....and that we as a Board have not made any such appointment,” portions of statement read.
It is based on this misleading notion that Presidency has stepped in to correct the false impression being fueled by Prof. William Asumaning.
Ag. Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr. Eugene Arhin, issued a statement today to put an end to the news which was based on “mere speculation and conjecture by an online publication”.
In a statement copied to Peacefmonline.com, the presidency indicated that the statement by Prof. William Asumaning was “unfortunate” and “completely needless” and he could have saved himself from the embarrassment if he had done a background check before taking a swipe at the President.
He added that should the President decide to appoint a new CEO, he would do it in accordance with laid down procedures.
Full Statement below…
RE: STATEMENT BY GOIL BOARD ON APPOINTMENT OF A NEW CEO
The Office of the President has taken notice of a statement issued by Prof. William Asumaning, the Board Chairman of Goil, on Saturday, February 25, 2017, in relation to the purported appointment of a “new” Chief Executive Officer of the Company by the President of the Republic.
The statement by the Board Chairman references a Ghanaweb publication of 24th February, 2017 titled “Nana Addo Picks New Heads for Forestry Commission, Ghana Health Service and GOIL”. It is on the basis of this story that Prof. William Asumaning put out his statement.
One would have hoped, in the interest of best practices, that the issuance of such a statement by Prof. William Asumaning would have been hinged on concrete evidence, in the form of appointment letters, and not mere speculation and conjecture by an online publication. The statement by the Board Chair was unfortunate and completely needless, to say the least.
For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to state that the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has not appointed a new CEO of GOIL, and when he decides to do so, it will be done in accordance with laid down procedures.
……signed……
Eugene Arhin
Ag. Director of Communications

@NDUOM,KWASI TAY AND AKUFFU ADDO... You are not smart enough for this kind of game.Try and improve upon it because people like some of us on this platform know that ALL THE THREE COMMENTS REFER TO ONLY ONE PERSON...
The Prof should step down himself. His good friend, the late Prof Atta-Mills gave him this position. Purely patronage and he should not make so much noise after quietly encumbering the position as Chair for 8 years plus.
I THINK IN THE NEXT MOMENT THE BOARD CHAIRMAN SHOULD BE PRESENTING HIS RESIGNATION LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GHANA, FOR UNNECCESSARILLY ATTACKING THE PRESIDNECY WRONGLY.
THESE EUGENE ARHIN AND HIS BOSS ARE SERIOUS JOKERS. ARE THEY SAYING THAT THEY DIDN'T SEE THE NEWS ITEMS APPOINTING STEPHEN AMOAH, HON KOKOFU AND GYIMAH ETC? ***barred word*** GOVERNEMNT WHICH THINKS THAT THEY CAN REMOVE EVERY APPOINTEES OF THE PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT IN ORDER TO START THE CHOP-CHOP.
This Eugene guy is not serious and it says a lot about this Akoffo -Addo government. They are all simply JOKERS. TWEAAAAAAAAAA
I am absolutely convinced that Eugene Arhin must be sacked. His level of intellect, experience and actions is well below the level of the job he is currently doing. This guy must simply go to save Nana Addo any further disgrace. if Prof. assumaning was wrong in reacting to news on ghanaweb and peacefm online, Eugene must know that he is also wrong in reacting to news from the same platforms. in as much these online platforms are not 100% accurate, they are the main source of our electronic information and any article posted there cannot be discounted. I believe the Professor was 100% right in issuing his statement, he reacted very cautiously as the chairman of a publicly quoted company. I am tempted to believe that the appointment was actually made but after the publication by the prof. then they realize their ignorance and hence quickly find someone to blame and escape their ignorance with no punishment. Eugene goooooo!!!!!!!!
It is becoming a trend that Ghanaians learn words and phrases for a season. "YOU UNDERSTAND", "SAME","SPACE" are the few ones l can readily recollect. Now almost every Ghanaian adds "space" to whatever statements they make. Asem oo. Fiscal space, media space, cultural space, Kofi space, Ama, space. Kwaku space, Akua space..hahaha Just give them some few months, and you would not hear the word again.
A needless action of the president triggered the needless action from the board chairman. Because he is perceived to be NDC he is quick to sack him.
@ THIS IS SERIOUS !! WHY IS IT THAT THE PRESIDENCY DIDN'T COME OUT WITH A DISCLAIMER WHEN THE NEWS OF THE APPOINTMENT CAME OUT BUT WAITED FOR THE PROFESSOR'S STATEMENT BEFORE ???
PK, the Prof was not clearing the air. Did you see his statement. He was literally chastising the government. He was doing propaganda
