Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otokunor, has posited that the creation of new regions, especially the Western North Region, will not necessarily translate into votes for the Akufo-Addo government in 2020 elections.
Speaking on Okay FM’s "Ade Akye Abia" Morning Show, Otukunor insisted the Akufo-Addo government will be shooting itself in the foot to assume that by creating the Western North region, people in the area will automatically vote for the NPP in 2020 elections.
“They should delude themselves in thinking that by dividing the Western Region to have Western North, automatically the people over there will vote for them; they are deceiving themselves. Let’s check for the development that the NPP administration has given to the people of Western North within 2 years in office; there is nothing to show for in Western North. In fact, the road network that under the Mahama-led NDC was being carried out at No. 81 to Bodi, the NPP has asked that work should be halted on the project and the contractors have been idle for close to 3 years now”, he asserted.
“...for almost 3 years nothing is done and so do you think these people will vote the NPP government? There are a lot of road network in Western North left hanging. In fact, the problem is with the Bia road which contractors were working but unfortunately, the NPP administration came to stop them and it has left the road in a deplorable state,” he disclosed.
Background
In the run up to the 2016 general elections, then candidate Nana Akufo-Addo pledged to facilitate the creation of four regions from the Western, Northern, Brong Ahafo and Northern regions on the back of proposals from the chiefs and people in the area.
On assumption of office he established the Ministry of Regional Reorganisation and Development primarily to spearhead the creation of the new regions which according to the government was at the heart of the people in the areas.
Since June 2017, the government has through the Ministry championed all the constitutional processes required in the creation of the regions including the December 27, 2018 referendum which allowed the people to overwhelmingly endorse the creation of six new regions.
With at least 80 per cent vote, the people of voted for Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah, North East, Western North and Oti to be created out of Brong Ahafo, Northern Region, Western Region and Volta Region.
In line with Article 5(8) of the 1992 Constitution, President Akufo-Addo, in February 2019, held the first of a series of ceremonies at the Jubilee House in Accra to issue a constitutional instrument to give effect to the new regions.
But while some believe it was a good course and might enure to the benefit of the ruling party in next year's general elections, others maintain that the creation of new regions is not something the president should be celebrating given the urgent bread and butter issues, as well as basic challenges of development that confronts the people of Ghana.
Unprecedented Mahama Infrastructure
Advancing reasons why the people of Western North will vote for the NDC to regain power in 2020, Peter Otokunor said it will be so because of the unprecedented works undertaken by the Mahama administration in the area.
“Just check out the road network at Juaboso to Bodi...the road network at Bibiani to Bekwai and from Bekwai to Wiawso and Juaboso is first class ultra-modern road. Quality road can be seen from Wiawso to Juaboso road; Bodi town roads are asphalted and so the road network at Western North is unprecedented”, he stated.
The NDC Deputy Chief Scribe was also optimistic that the NDC will reclaim the three constituencies within the area that it lost to the NPP in the 2016 election, because of the caliber of leaders they have elected in the new region.
“If we check our manifesto, we also wanted to create a new region in that area and so the fact that the NPP has hurriedly created a new region for them does not mean that the people over there will vote for the NPP....as for that one, anybody can do it, even a class 1 pupil who is made a president can create new regions”, he asserted.

Such a ***barred word*** thinks we Sefwis are ***barred word***. Don't talk about the Benchemaa-oseikojokurom road. Kuffour tarred the road up to the Benchemaa junction, and the next face was to be upto Adjoafua. Unfortunately, NPP exited. For 8 years, NDC did nothing on that stretch. Going into the 2016 election, MIDWEST brought two or three machines to grade the surface, which later ended in a big disaster after the election. The truth was that, MIDWEST was never given a contract. Yes, no contract was signed. The company, owned by a party faithful was given the promise by the powers that may be, that the road will be awarded to him. The company only graded the surface to paint a picture as though the contract had been awarded, to ***barred word*** voters into voting for the NDC. Of course, my people always vote for NDC for Rawlings' sake. I dare Otukonor to produce the contract on that road, and I will break my testicles infront of the Markola women. If he cares to know, he should check the NDC green book. This road is listed as part of Mahama's achievements. The book was published in 2015. Yet, by the end of 2016, not even a contract had been awarded. In fact, in 2014, John Mahama announced in parliament that the road was 25 percent complete..... I could go on and on.... I was a strong NDC, of course, most Sefwis were brought up to be NDC.. However, after seeing the light, I have sworn to myself never to vote for them again in my life, especially, as they have John Mahama as candidate... I pray my people will equally be enlightened to know that Rawlings is no more the leader, but one incompeten.t dead good whose terms of reference in life is deception.
Okunto abooooooaaaaaaaba you see your life? So not wanna do make Mahama loose and you still no learn anything yet... Anomaa
Masa resign ASAP. Do you know the implications of what you have said? It means NDC is a corrupt incompetent political party that could not do what a class one pupil could do. Akoa yi paa!!!
I can see that this ***barred word*** Idi0t does not know what to say. He wants his party people to see that he is working. This will go on history as the most incompetent NDC exercutives. After 2020, they will salute Kofi and Adam and co. So this class 1 job, you could not even do in government. You people are incompetent indeed.
See how f0000l111sh this man is.
This is the best self-inflicted political blow of the year.....so you have admitted that creation of regions is so easy that even class pupils can do it.....yet Mahama with all the degrees in on his CV could not even dream of the idea let alone initiate it. Thank you for endorsing Mahama as the most incompetent person on earth. In other words Mahama should not have been president of Ghana. Thank you.
Thanks to God that the NPP didn't pass this comments it would have been labelled as propaganda but now that NDC deputy secretary says so, we can confidently say the Mr incompetent MAHAMA was a disappointment to his own land and people.
“Just check out the road network at Juaboso to Bodi...the road network at Bibiani to Bekwai and from Bekwai to Wiawso and Juaboso is first class ultra-modern road. Quality road can be seen from Wiawso to Juaboso road; Bodi town roads are asphalted and so the road network at Western North is unprecedented”. NDC is always deceiving her followers. They will soon be in a 'comfortable lead' again!
Still talking of roads, roads, roads. This is what you campaigned on and lost miserably, yet you cannot think of anything else to talk about. You provided those roads and still the people voted you out. Then you come back talking of providing those same roads. What incompetence is this?
Thank you, Mawuto. The argument hits him hard but he seems unaware. Shame on him.
