Outgoing President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Emmanuel Boakye Yiadom says he sees nothing wrong if political parties show interest to sponsor students during an election.
“It is been done elsewhere in Africa, so what is wrong if done in Ghana?” he questioned.
According to him, students have the “freedom” to decide on which political party they want to join – hence, disagrees with the argument that political parties must not interfere in student politics.
Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show, 'Ghana Montie', Mr Boakye Yiadom claimed the NUGS election is non-partisan – but, could not prove that with facts.
“I served as NUGS president without associating myself with any political party. I can’t say the same for others. I don’t know what they do. I contested the position in my name and my institution,” he told host Kwesi Aboagye.
His comment follows the election of a new NUGS president which was marred with violence.
The union elected Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo as President despite agitations over the credibility of the exercise.
Mr Appiah Larbi-Ampofo won the election by garnering 78.1 per cent of the total votes cast.
Some aggrieved students said they doubt the credibility of the elections. They subsequently declared another aspirant as winner.
Others also cited political interference during the election.
It took police personnel on the grounds to calm tempers when some aggrieved members expressed dissatisfaction over the electoral process.
