A senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Political Science Department, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante has said that the ultimate goal of the founder of the Movement For Change, Alan Kyerematen, towards the 2024 general elections is to be a kingmaker and not President.
He said that Mr Kyerematen himself was aware that the best he could do was to gather some significant votes, add it to the other existing parties and push the 2024 presidential elections into a second round.
Alan Kyerematen, who was a stalwart of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and served as Minster of Trade and Industry resigned from the party in September this year after special delegates conference that selected five out of 10 aspirants who wanted to lead the NPP as presidential candidate in 2024. He placed third in the first round of the race. But dropped out of the race and resigned from the NPP.
Alan Kyrematen proposes government of national unity if successful in 2024 Presidential bid
“That is the best that they can do. We did some work, and if you look at the statistics, from 1992 up to 2020, all the other political parties put together in terms of their average performance, did not go beyond 4 per cent ,” he noted,” Dr Asah-Asare explained.
“So if you are talking about an individual who is going to come in and cross the threshold of 50 per cent and beyond, I am afraid that is not what Mr Alan Kyerematen is working for. He himself knows that it won’t work,” he stressed.
The Senior Political Science Lecturer was Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, November 22, 2023,
He further stated that Mr Kyerematen, who is a former Minister of Trade and Industry, knew he could be a kingmaker if he pushed the elections into a runoff which would bring all those who launched attacks against him that he was not a candidate for the 2024 elections before him on their knees.
“That is all that he is fighting for. But for winning, he knows that it will not work,” Dr Asah-Asante added.
However, even on the ability of Mr Kyerematen to push the election into a runoff, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante m said it was too early to make that prediction.

@Koo Kum, I am not sure when Alan said or how he demanded directly or indirectly that the flagbearership should be handed him without competition. It does appear to me that that kind of impression, including the famous "dadabee" mantra, being created by the party is one of the flimsy attempts to escape from the real issues. For a man who paid the exorbitant fees charged by the party, knowing that he was contesting 9 other people, and who went about campaigning diligently cannot be accused of wanting to have the leadership on a silver platter. The main issues are that things are constantly changing over time. So should our politics be evolving in a positive manner, it should be refining by the day and we humans who should be getting more refined need to consciously fine tune our activities. Why should a party's rank and file be asked publicly to declare their support for one man in a contest with 9 other people? Why should the whole government machinery throw their support publicly and in an uncivilised manner for one person amidst rumours of intimidation, vilification etc. Why should supporters of the favourite candidate subject the supporters of other contestants to torture, including attempting to pluck out somebody's eye and chasing people from voting centres, displaying their votes in public etc? What were these inhuman behaviours for in this age? Why should such huge amounts of monies be used as a trap for unprincipled people's conscience? All these happened, yet there were no party leaders who called people to order or just to even condemn it. Of course as I civilised human being, I wouldn't hesitate to resign immediately just as Alan did, because this was no longer a healthy competition and one did not need rocket science to see that. Alan recognised that no one deserved to be disabled or killed for his election's sake.
bitter loser are you people serious! So Alan should leave his cheeks everytime for slaps. Shame. Whoever wins is a Ghanaian Mahama or Bawumia. But it's always honourable to win in a fair way and not by intimidation , cheating and vociferous buying of people's decision with money. Yes with the kind of hardship NPP has put Ghanaians into how many can be principled enough to vote with their consciences instead of grabbing whatever one can and throw away that vote to the highest bidder. We are doomed
@Kay, what treatment would you have prescribed for Alan, that he was not given, in the Party? He simply felt the flag bearer position should have been handed to him on a silver platter. Remember, NPP is not like the "other" party. His sense of self relevance is very undemocratic, and the excuses and reasons he offered for his resignation and departure from NPP were very pedestrian.
If the NPP now describes Alan as bitter loser, then what description fits the whole party that has become embittered about a member's departure? Is it not within a person's right to join and leave an association at their own volition? In any case, assuming Alan is bitter, which would also be true for the NPP, does he have a valid cause to be bitter? Was he treated fairly? Prior to the super delegates elections, Ddd the party offer a fair playing ground for members to compete? Does anyone deserve their eyes and limbs removed due to an election? Did Dr. Bawumia who was the beneficiary of all the injustice rejoice over a screwed win or publicly registered his displeasure about those unfortunate incidents? You people should have empathy as humans, that was what happened for over 8 people to lose their lives in 2020 elections and both Bawumia and Nana Addo never condemned those acts because it benefitted them. Is that the direction we want our country to keep charting?
Alan has lost his political relevance. Ken Agyapong is more relevant in the NPP. Alan and his selfish bunch have left the party and I think it's a blessing in disguise. It will be difficult for Dr. Bawumia to win the 2024 election without the help of Alan but it is possible. May Allah grant you victory Mr. Vice President
@Adwo, your miserable self is not even bitter to you. Your style of describing your opponents is mind-boggling. Alan left NPP on principle and that principle holds water to discerning minds in Ghana. You will be among the first people to attack Bawumia right after his loss in the 2014 election.
I doubt that Alan would act unkindly towards the NPP and Vice President Bawumia for something he did not create, assuming such a creation even exists, in order to harm Bawumia specifically. Such behavior would be politically immature and ***barred word*** for Alan, and it would not benefit his career. It seems unlikely that Bawumia, who has been respectful, has given Alan enough cause to merit that kind of vilification. In fact, both individuals share similar character traits that would have greatly benefited their partnership as president and vice president.
Such a pampered bitter looser
