The Ukrainian government has organised a two-day Peace Summit in Switzerland where about hundred (100) attendees across the world were present to partake in the peace summit. Among the attendees is Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo.
During the summit, President Akufo-Addo stated that, the war which began in February 2022, has led to hike in food prices on the world market, leading to a corresponding effect on the African market.
President Akufo-Addo addressing the attendees of the summit on Sunday, June 16, 2024, emphasized that the mission to seek a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine is rooted in the principles of international law and the UN Charter, adding that the, African continent has been severely affected by the Russian/Ukraine War.
He said, “We are facing additional strains on vulnerable economies and struggling to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The blockade of the Black Sea has led to severe shortages and skyrocketing food prices, precipitating a food security crisis across Africa."
“This has resulted in a surge in the cost of living and a looming threat of hunger and malnutrition over the continent’s most vulnerable populations. The repercussions of the war extend far beyond Ukraine, threatening global stability and economic security.”
President Akufo-Addo posited that, sustainable peace is built on open, honest, and inclusive dialogue adding that by reaffirming the commitment to the rule of law, respect for national sovereignty, and protection of human rights, the Summit provided an opportunity to bridge divides and lay the groundwork for a lasting peace on the globe.
He said, “The Ukraine Peace Formula, which includes the cessation of hostilities, withdrawal of foreign troops, and restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, stands as a critical framework for achieving lasting peace.”
Speaking at the Summit on Sunday, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that the ongoing impasse between Ukraine and Russia will not end because the Russian President, Vladimir Putin will not end the war, hence, must be stopped.
According to President Zelensky, the Western aid was not enough to win the war.
