The Government of Ghana has fulfilled its promise to reward ex-Black Stars players who brought glory to the nation by winning the country’s four African Cup of nation trophies.
The Ghana government months ago assured the 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982 African cup of nation winning squads of compensation after failure to perform its initial promise of rewarding houses to them.
The Black Stars of Ghana have failed to win any silverware for the past 33 years of which many have associated the situation to spiritual matters linking it to an alleged curse impose on the team by the ex-footballers whose promise were not met.
The Sports Minister Hon. Mahama Ayariga on Tuesday presented a cheque for Gh˘ 1.7 million to be distributed among the winning squads.
“The President, three months ago promised the ex-Black Stars players who won the African Cup of nation for the country an amount of Gh˘ 1.7 million,” Spokesperson of the Sports Ministry Michael Frimpong disclosed to Peace Fm.
“So we set up a committee to get the names of all these players. The committee brought a list of 95 ex-Black Stars players. Thus players who played in the four Cup of nations”.
“So each of the 95 players had about Gh˘ 18,000.00. So in case a player appeared in two cup of nation tournaments, then the person is going to get a double of that amount”.
“The same amount of money will be given to the families of players who have passed away. So for now we have settled and given the monies to the ex-footballers”.
Ghana has failed to win the African Cup of nation since 1982, coming close to winning it on two occasions, thus in Senegal 1992 and Angola 2010.
