Spokesperson to the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Gideon Boako, has sought to put an end to the widespread claim by members of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), especially Hon. Alhassan Suhuyini, MP for Tamale North, that the Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the run-up to the 2016 elections, stated that an NPP government will harness the resources of the country to develop Ghana ‘without borrowing’.
According to him, nowhere did the Vice-President, either publicly or privately, made any such assertions.
He was speaking to comments made the NDC MP during a political discussion programme on Saturday, 15th June, 2019.
Over the weekend, during Joy News TV analysis show, Newsfile, the Tamale North Member of Parliament read a tweet supposedly coming from the Twitter account of the then vice presidential candidate of the NPP to the effect that, if given the mandate, the NPP would never borrow for the country’s developmental agenda.
Quoting from the said tweet, Suhuyini sought to discredit the credibility of the Vice President in relation to the fact that the current government is borrowing for its policies and projects.
But the Spokesperson for the Vice-President has shot back, accusing Hon. Alhassan Suhuyini of peddling blatant falsehoods.
Speaking in an interview on Okay FM’s "Ade Akye Abia" Morning Show, Monday, Dr. Boako explained that the then Running Mate of NPP in the 2016 elections rather complained about the reckless borrowing of the NDC government led by then President John Dramani Mahama.
“We were complaining of NDC's reckless borrowing which did not see any improvement in the GDP growth of the economy. Again, as at that time of borrowing recklessly, the GDP rate was declining from 8 to 3.4 percent...”
"The issue is that as we borrow, we have to find a way out to use the money so that it will benefit the entire country . . . we must see productivity and growth at the end of the day but aside the excessive borrowing, we didn’t see any growth in the economy under Mahama administration,” he argued.
He therefore said that Ghana has been fortunate that under President Akufo-Addo, the country has not gone for more loans and yet there is growth in the GDP rate and much development can been seen in the economy.
“ . . but today, in spite of our borrowing, the GDP rate has seen growth . . . so it is not true that Dr. Bawumia said the NPP government will not borrow when it comes to power; this is pure lies and Ghanaians must disregard it,” he refuted.

If reality is showing you something else in government just eat a humble pie and tell us you got it wrong that makes a gentle man. Stop massaging and reshaping the words of Dr. Bawumia Please
Hi Mr. Boako! yr boss bawimia is a big time lair with no credibility in this country. He in 2016 to us that if they comes to power they will not borrow, pls we all noted it down so u should fear God and say the truth it will take you to heaven. thanks.
I am very much disappointed in this Dr Boako why can't we speak the truth at least once in our life time despite the results it might cause us?
