Andy Murray backed Novak Djokovic onto the ropes on Saturday but was unable to deliver the killer blow and force his way through to the French Open final.
Resuming at 3-3 in the fourth set, the 28 year-old Scot played nervelessly to take their semi-final match into a deciding set before going down 3-6, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, 1-6 in the 62 minutes of play needed after the lunchtime restart.
He had Djokovic decidedly wobbling at the start of the fifth but could not complete what would have been his eighth comeback from two sets down, and his first from merely a set down against the world No 1.
