The Ghana Education Service(GES) in the Upper West Region has asked the pregnant primary pupils in the region to return to school and prepare for their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Reports from the region indicate that as many as 30 school girls in the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa District have been impregnated within the 2013/2014 academic year.
But in an interview with Citi News, the Director of Education in the area, Kate Banka said their checks only revealed 15 pregnancy cases.
She emphasized the need for the pregnant girls to return to school.
To that end, she revealed that they had initiated processes to allow the girls to return to school and write their final examinations.
We met the community leaders about the issue and all those who were pregnant. The girls who are in JSS three should come and write and those who are in JSS two and three should be encouraged to come back to school. Even if they dont want to come back to school, well arrange and get them a different school to attend, he said.
