The first president of Ghana was a sincere leader in all his dealings and was never interested in amassing wealth, former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Prof. Mike Oquaye has said.
“Nkrumah was an honest man, even when he was wrong. Nkrumah was not a thief, and I am saying it authoritatively upon research,” he told Class FM’s Prince Minkah on the Executive Breakfast Show on September 21, the day on which Ghana marks Founder’s Day every year.
Even though he said “Nkrumah was wrong in giving out monies to countries like Guinea in pursuing a wrong policy of socialism”, he maintained that Dr Nkrumah was truthful to the people of Ghana in terms of financial management and he was neither “selfish” nor stole “money to dump abroad”.
He indicated that the “new element of money stealing” that exists in the country’s management currently is “not Ghanaian” and “people behave as if politicians must be thieves”.
Even though he refrained from naming specific people who are involved in stealing of the country’s resources, Prof Ocquaye stated: “If people are doing bus branding as a substitute for stealing state money, let us call a spade a spade; Nkrumah will not do that, so, that is the difference. That is why I respect him and I mean it seriously.”
For him, Nkrumah’s socialist policy was wrong because “state industries were seen as everybody’s industry and, therefore, nobody’s industry”.
In his assessment, Nkrumah’s socialism let Ghana down but “I admire his vision for education, his [establishment of the] Tema Harbour and many other things”.

The Description of Nkrumah from Grandchildren of UGCC is never in light of all his deeds as they were on different dimension on Ghana's independence and style of governance so its is beyond understanding to this old man trying to praise Ghana's first prime minister and President at this time we are celebrating founders DAY in Ghana
Mr Mike Ocquayes rather mix bag of Kwame Nkrumah legacy to me is totally WRONG !!!!!!!!; I would agree that Kwame Nkrumah was honest in certain areas of of his political adventure but Kwame Nkrumah was not wrong at assisting and giving monies to our brothers in other counteries for their idependence emacipation ;afterall when he was in the same situation he was helped by some people into the UGCC ; the man was not father Christmas there were good reasons for him doing so at the time ; Kwame Nkrumah's socialist policies were the right policies for Ghana at the time ; the reasons for such assertions were in line with the socio-economic development of most of the developed counteries the United States ; Japan ;most European counteries including China ; no country developed country or started straight from their economic development from a capitalist economic base ; this our problem in Africa today ; Kwame NNkrumah was a visionary ; you build your base with a socialist economic strategies and later on gradually allow the capitalist economic strategy to take over ; in the case of China they started with the communist policy gradually moved to socialism with Moa Tse Tung ; and gradually introduced socialist /capitalist strategies led by Dao SAO ***barred word*** ; today China maintains a command economic strategy and a socialist mix but do not allow capitalist initiatives to take over; in the US history will tell you that most industries started on small scale co=-operative socialist strategies and then the capitalist ideologies moved in the ;example is the FED Bank started on a small scale as a family banking business with the Rothchilds but that was the only large scale business that was not allowed to go fully capitalist ; it is still a state organ and this idea that there was no stealing during the Kwame Nkrumah's time is rather naive ; either he did not know or was unaware or colluded ; there were rampant inflation of contracts and the only difference when ministers were caught were fired by the one o'clock news bullettin; some of us were there and knew a lot ; the difference is that Jon Mahama will not sack anybody for stealing ; there politicians like Krobo Edusei ; Gebedemah ; Botsio;Kweku Baako and others who were all ***barred word*** ; the fact in that kwame kept quiet because these were his people in the CPP ; where did Krobo Edusei get his cash to buy a gold bed from London ; besides when it comes to political propaganda Kwame Nkrumah was worse ; Kwame Nkrumah's legacy he left was good but there were faults make no mistake about it .
