President Akufo-Addo has indicated that there is an ongoing debate within government to pass a decision on whether or not Ghana should abolish the system of duties payment on imported goods at the ports.
Mr. Akufo-Addo said this whilst addressing journalists at his final media encounter for 2018 on Wednesday, December 19 at the Jubilee House.
He used the encounter to update the media and the general public on happenings within several sectors of the country’s economy, including agriculture, railway, aviation, roads, banking and the judicial system.
According to him, “On high import duties, there is a major debate going on inside our government right now about what action we are going to take on the duties.”
President Akufo-Addo added that “there is a strong lobby that is saying that we should go, for instance, the level of Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai – almost no import duties, everything comes in and it will generate a lot of business.
According to the president, the outcomes of the ongoing debate on the way forward for the maintenance or abolishment of duties payment system would be made public within due course.
“That argument is being made. The traditional argument is also being made that we maintain the duty system. I am hoping that very soon the final result of that debate inside the government will be known to the Ghanaian people,” he pointed out.

This is that chanaians shouldn't put their trust in this.they should forget it are we not in this country when a budget was ready that spare part dealers are not going to pay tax what was the result
Mr President FREE PORT AND FREE ELECTRICITY WILL BE WOOOOOOW for Ghanaians. Our market women are moving in and out of TOGO to bring affordable goods to Ghana simply because of Free duty at Port. Even If not free about 70% reduction in these 2 services will make Ghana a fantastic nation
Misleading headline...
I think that's a good idea but I also think it's likely to bring a lot of hardship to the state just like how free education is doing to the country .Having said that, I also think the taxes at the harbour is just too exorbitant. You could import a car worth 3 thousand dollars and pay a tax of about 5 thousand dollars on same. I think they should rather reduce the taxes
So you people believe this rhetoric eh? After all the promises they made, how many of them have they fulfilled. This is another promise that won’t see the light of day.
It's about time Ghana ports become Freeports. Liberia's Freeport generates a lot of income from foreign ships registered and flying the Liberian flag. Those who collect duties at Ghana ports will oppose the Freeport/duty-free because most of the monies that end up in their pockets will be stopped. Shame on opposers. Ghana needs to move forward and prosper.
Please use the monies you have collected to fix and construct the Aburi Berekusum Road
please make this happen because we are suffering from corruption.
Let the people decide by a referendum After all we voted you and your government into power. Let the people decide
Wasteful president ever in the history of Ghana.
