The Ghana Police Service has expressed sadness over the fact that some persons looked on as a driver and his conductor physically assaulted a police officer.
A commercial bus driver and his conductor who have been arrested were captured in a video assaulting a police officer who was trying to query them for parking wrongly.
Speaking to this in an interview on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme, Director-General of Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, ACP David Eklu expressed surprise that 'people looked on as a man in uniform was being assaulted'.
"I can’t understand how . . . we are saddened that a lot of people were standing there doing nothing. I thought the public would have assisted but they didn’t and it saddens us," he bemoaned.
According to him, "the people around could have helped in arresting the two (citizen's arrest) since they were doing something wrong; attacking a man in uniform or they could have dialed the police emergency number".
Meanwhile, the driver and his conductor will appear before court today.
According to the policeman who is with the Odorkor police station, he was performing his duties when he was attacked by the civilians for confronting them when they violated the road regulation act.
The Policeman revealed that he confronted the driver after he parked in the middle of the road to pick passengers which resulted in massive traffic.
He also stated that he went to the scene to solve the situation but met an accident between a motorbike and a private car and attempting to remedy the situation he was almost run over by the driver who parked in the middle of the road.
According to the policeman, he chased the driver on a motorbike which he managed to cross him and queried why he was driving recklessly.
This resulted in a heated verbal argument which the drivers and their mates decided to pounce on the policeman and ended up beating him mercilessly.

Ghana Police sometimes I wonder the kind of training you received. I wonder if it is the same police training the likes of USA, UK, GERMANY etc receives is the same given you here! You are so unprofessional in your duties....At a check Point at night, I police man will point his torch light right in your face, you dare not question him why? A police vehicle will be driving in the middle of traffic with his siren and light on. They go pass you, and it is a police pick-up with civilians, IMMIGRATION officers, school children and the likes going to work or school. Some are kids being driving to work. Others will pack barrels of water, washing machines and so on...meanwhile you report an issue and they will tell you they have no car hence you need to provide one. Lastly, why chase a driver where in other jurisdiction, you pick the vehicle registration and cause his arrest at the next point or circulate the number so he will be on a wanted list........Why are you sad..........Remember the difference between the police and the civilian is just the uniform...even that kwraa, it can be hired for Gh¢ 1.00. So Ghana police you have a long way to go before you loose that authority entirely!!!
If you don't change from that negative attitude of yours, civilians will continue to assault you in the full glare of the public. You have to act professionally in your dealings with drivers particularly commercial drivers. Familiarity, they say, breeds contempt. Simply put, stop taking bribes from commercial drivers and know that a police officer does not have to physically assault suspects or attempt to remove car keys from the ignition. The laws are there, use them please.
WHAT DID THE POLICE MEN IN UNIFORM DO WHEN AN MP WAS SLAPPED. DID THEY HELP IN ARRESTING THE PEOPLE SINCE THEY WERE DOING SOMETHING WRONG...............SHAME ON YOU
I'm disappointed in these 'onlookers'. The least they could've done was to cheer the beaters on. Ghana Police Service is sad? I'm sad that you're sad. You should thank your God I was not there some!
Mr police officer your narration is a clear indication of an incompetent police officer. ask your self why the office leave what he was doing to chease the drive on a motor bike????? the answer is to arrest him and collect money from him. Let me remained you Mr Police officer one group of people who hate Ghana police is DRIVERS because of how you terrible you deal & take money from them. Most driver will Beat a police office if he get the smallest opportunity. See how fast you have arrested them & going to court. Are the police officers more human than any of us?
Because the Ghana police has NO CREDIBILITY! Helping the police today and tomorrow they will expose you! They collect GHc1, Ghc1 bribes from these driver, so the do not respect them (police)!
Though it was wrong for those men to beat the policeman, you should also understand that the police has been a disappointment to us. From their track record, we only see them as pretending to be working for mother Ghana, when all they seem to be interested in is to ask for bribes. If they are really interested in law and order, they would prosecute the offender even if he/she voluntarily offers a bribe.
Mr police officer, do not be surprised because now, the public has come to understand that...if it is about a poor civilian, then it is a fine case (quoting police own terms) but when it is about a politician, it is no go area by the police. We are in this country when Elder Ofosu Ampofo caught on tape making treasonable statement...but when invited by your outfit he was coached and allowed by the police to honour the so-called invitation at his own convenient time but if it were to be a poor citizen his home would have been invaded in RAMBO STYLE. So now public confidence in the police service has been TOTALY ERODED but it has become " me na merembowoo nso obi rebowo a, me'ngye wo" literally translated that, I will not beat you but I will not come to your aid when you are being beaten by someone else.
why are you surprised, policemen are beating civilians what have you done about it? what happened last week between policemen and media men in accra? if change is not done, we the civilians are going to beat policemen severely.we fed-up of you people. shame, corrupt Ghanaian police, one one cedis Ghanaian police.
Sad is understatement, start crying cos very soon the beating will be bunch. When society loose trust in structures and systems; lawlessness is the order employed.
