The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will speak on the economy on Thursday, April 7, 2022.
He will be using the opportunity of an invitation extended to him by the National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Danquah Institute (DI) to address issues on the economy.
There have been public calls for the Vice President, noted for his economic prowess, to speak on the economy.
Some critics have in recent times, asked about the whereabouts of the Vice President at a time Ghana’s economy was going through some challenges as a result of Covid-19 and the ongoing Ukraine/Russia invasion which has had global effects on oil and economic activities.
Dr Bawumia has been at the forefront of Ghana's digitalisation agenda.
His political opponents, have accused him of intentionally recently shying away from commenting on the economy.
But responding to his critics last week when he addressed participants in this year’s agricultural students career guidance and mentorship dialogue bootcamp (AG-STUD Africa Bootcamp 2022) at the Jubilee House in Accra the Vice-President said: “Sometimes people say ‘well, we thought you were an economist, but you’re doing so much in the IT space.
Have you left economics behind?”
“No, no, not at all. In fact, it is because of the economy that I am focusing on digitisation because without building those pillars, our economy will just not be able to stand on its own feet.
The Vice-President said he has not abandoned matters on the economy, as some people seek to suggest.
He explained that what he was doing with regard to digitisation and digitalisation had a direct bearing on the economy.
National TESCON training and orientation
The Vice-President will therefore be using the opportunity of the event to be hosted at the Pentecost Convention Centre at the Millenium City at Kasoa to speak on the economy.
The event will also host the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo as the Special Guest of Honour.
In an interview with the BBC on Monday, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said he does not know an economy in the world that is currently doing well.
President Akufo-Addo on economy
President Akufo-Addo said Ghana was instituting measures to help the country recover from the ravages of COVID-19.
He acknowledged that the world is going through difficult times and "Ghana is no exception."
"There is no country in the world that is escaping the ravages of both Covid-19 and also the impact of Ukraine [invasion] but what you need to look at, where are the elements being put on the ground that looks beyond the Covid and beyond the Russian Ukraine war? I think that you will find that in Ghana."
President Akufo-Addo for instance said the recovery programme that Ghana have is that which is considered "very credible. And it is what is going to give us [Ghana] the opportunity to come out of this period a stronger economy, and it is that future that we're looking at, when we're attracting people."

If the Ghanaians indiscriminately kept their own counsel and reflected to find out how their dear country would have fared if the NDC's administration were in power to manage the affairs of the country amid the pandemic and, of late, the Ukraine-war. It is instructive and worth noting that, without those crises and war, the NDC-administration sent Ghana to the IMF for a financial bail-out. Hence, those dishonest political opponents trying hard to use the current global hardship as a propaganda tool to discredit the hard-working Akufo-Addo-administration are doing so only for their own parochial political interest and not that of Ghana. I know the people of Ghana certainly can read between the lines to know which political order has their well-being at heart.
This subject called ECONOMICS is something. In Ghana you hear of 'renowned economist', 'economic expert', 'seasoned economist' and all sorts of titles. How come we have all these so called experts and our economy is in shambles? After we go to the same market with these experts, we buy fuel at same price, food, building materials, exchange rate, we are all inside. The lay man in Ghana is not interested in interest rates, inflation, GDP, comparing NDC to NPP, what they want to see is affordable building materials, affordable fuel, affordable farm inputs, affordable transport fares, good roads, good school infrastructure, potable water, affordable energy. We elect people and sacrifice for them to enjoy at our expense. If same people can't solve our challenges but come in to worsen our plight, what's the use voting for so called politicians. Am a layman, Bawumia should explain this to my understanding. Question: How is Ghana's annual budget prepared such that the Ghana Revenue Authority keep telling us they have exceeded their target and yet government can't honour statutory payments like GETFUND, DACF, NHIS, ROAD FUND, allocations to MDA's. If you ask your revenue collector to go out there and bring you GHC 1 million Ghana cedis, I think you know this amount can meet all your expenditures, now the revenue collector goes out and bring you GHC 1million, five hundred thousand Ghana cedis, ie 50% more than the target given him and yet you can't fund your expenditures, how? We currently have government departments who receive nothing, not even GHC 1.00 for a whole year and yet you expect them to function, how. We have government departments with 5 or more official vehicles and their total budget for fuel for the whole year is GHC 5,000.00, can these amount fuel all these vehicles for 12 months when filling one vehicle's tank can cost you GHC 800.00 at current fuel prices. A country with a population of 30 million with natural resources such as gold, timber, manganese, cocoa, oil, 2 harbours ie Tema and Takoradi can't still manage on it's own, how? Are these resources a blessing or a curse? Current happenings tells us these resources can't be blessings, NO. 65 years old independent country we can't link our 2 major cities i.e. Accra-Kumasi with a dual carriage road, Why? 9 out of the 16 regions in Ghana use a single lane road to get to the capital , upper east, upper west, Savannah, north east, northern, Bono, Bono east, Ahafo, Ashanti all using a single lane road to reach Accra.Add vehicles from Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. Oh mother Ghana, where did we go wrong?
