The Dormaa Circuit Court has sentenced a 35-year-old man to 10 years� imprisonment for possession of narcotic drugs.
The convict, Collins Kumi (popularly known as 'Rasta'), was arrested at a public cemetery at Dormaa Akwamu in the Dormaa East District for possessing 21 wrappers of a substance suspected to be cannabis (Indian hemp).
He pleaded guilty to the offence of unlawful possession of narcotic drugs with explanation but the court, presided over by Mr Justice Alexander Osei Tutu, found him guilty.
The Dormaa Municipal Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mahamud Yusif, who briefed the Daily Graphic at Dormaa Ahenkro, said Kumi and others, who were at the time smoking at the Dormaa Akwamu public cemetery, took to their heels when they saw the police approaching but the police pursued and arrested Kumi.
He said a search on Kumi revealed 21 wrappers of a substance suspected to be cannabis.
DSP Yusif said during police investigations and the trial, the 21 wrappers were forwarded to the Police Forensic Laboratory for analytical examination and report.
He said the report issued confirmed that the 21 wrappers found on Kumi were cannabis.
