Boldly inscribed on the Ghana Police logo is Service with Integrity but what one earth can sway personnel in the service from their line of duty and care only about making loads of cash from illegal activities?
Well the story to unfold talks about how police in the Twifo Atimokwa township have lost respect, abandoned their work for illegal mining activities, shot and killed their colleague miners all in the name of gold.
Hon. Bossman Shiaman Jnr., the District Chief Executive for Twifo Atimokwa is calling for a comprehensive overhaul of police officers in his area.
According to him, the policemen in his area had totally saturated the respect the service bestows on them and established questionable relationship with the illegal miners.
Hon. Shiaman disclosed on Okay FM that the integrity of the service has been tattered and galamsey operations have rather been booming in his district, Dunkwa on Offin and Upper Denkyira West.
As DCE for the area, he explains that he has received several calls in the past about the nefarious acts of policemen in the area. But according to him, he had always considered the outcry as mere allegations though he made efforts to curb the activities in the area.
He established a research team that managed to do their own findings until they uncovered the specific policemen behind the galamey operation.
The whole revelation came about when the police team in the area embarked on a routine check and killed two wee smokers in the process.
On Friday, we got to know the police had embarked on a routine check to swoop certain wee smokers. Then on Saturday, we got to know two persons believed to be galamsey operators had died from gunshots fired by the police at a nearby town. On Sunday, I was called to appear in person at the police station in my area but when I got there, the aggrieved town dwellers had brought the corpse and requested that the police bury them, he said.
The deceased are believed to be illegal miners who were in the same business with the policemen in the area. The town dwellers were stunned their illegal business partners (policemen) could turn on them when they had all been doing business for the past twenty years in the area.
Out of this same business, the head of the police service in the area is reported to have purchased fleet of mining boats that stores his proceeds of illegal minerals.
Nothing, according to the DCE for the area could cool the nerves of the town dwellers when they assembled at the forecourt of the police station and this charged them to raze the building with fire.
Tried as he may, he couldnt get in touch with the District Commander of the Police in the area because his phone was off as at the moment the unfortunate incident was unfolding.
As leader for the district, he disclosed that he called for reinforcement from nearby town and quickly urged the few policemen around to run for their lives.
