President John Mahama Friday said the annual Independence Day celebration of Ghana–characterised mostly by a march parade–was tweaked this year to reduce stress and pressure on participating schoolchildren and students.
Every year, pupils and students are stretchered off the Black Star Square during the March 6 parade, since they stand in the baking hot Sun for long hours.
Last year’s parade was marred by rains which drenched all the pupils and students.
In the aftermath of that experience, President Mahama said the state found it necessary to think outside the box and make some changes to the parade in order to make the schoolchildren feel more comfortable.
He said the reformatting of the parade ensured that the schoolchildren “came only at a time they were required to march” and resumed their seats comfortably, afterwards, even though a few of them still collapsed out of exhaustion and had to be stretchered off the parade ground.
