Security Expert, Dr Kwesi Aning has shot down calls for the Military to be deployed to fight against armed robbery in the country which is on the increase in recent times.
On Tuesday, armed robbers stormed the Royal Motors company at the North Industrial Area in Accra amidst sporadic gunshots and succeeded in bolting with at least Gh500,000 of the company’s sales.
Just in about 24 hours later, armed robbers in Tema also shot dead a Lebanese businessman on Wednesday bolting with a cash sum of GHC200,000 after the deceased who was a worker with soap manufacturing firm Delta Agro had visited the Zenith Bank.
The incident has heightened fear among the citizenry prompting calls by the Minority in Parliament for the immediate nationwide deployment of a joint Military/Police taskforce to clampdown on the criminals.
But Dr Aning holds the view that involving the Military now will be unnecessary.
“No is not time yet for the Military, bringing the Military in is dangerous. It socializes the Military, it makes them lose their aura of invincibility and being the very last force that need to be brought in times of crises. We haven’t gotten there yet.
“Bringing the Military in and of course we’ve been doing this gradually in which we’re taking our Military into a police force, doing policing duties that are not their fundamental primary function. The Ghana Police Service, we tend to lambaste them but it’s a potentially effective institution. Politicians have failed in understanding the Service, the function they perform, the types of interventions and retooling the Police Service needs.”

it is very necessary my friend due to the modus operandi of these hardened cr1m1nals. the military have the skills to fight them. these cr1m1nals are shooting and killing ple, is that not war on the citizens? this is where we need the military most. to defend lives and properties. i dont think a military man will run away upon seeing an armed robber with gun. but most of the police ple do which makes the cr1m1nals to get away every time. I dont know where u get ur brains sir but u need to rethink abt the issue be4 making any further comments. who even made him that security expert sef?
Dr. Aning, they way you talked made me feel you are also part of the robbery going on in the country. Do you want people lives as well as their properties to be taken away before the Military come in????
We cannot allow ourselves to be bitten by snakes while stick lies idle. A stitch in time saves nine. Full military intervention is necessary to stem the tide of armed robbery. No one is safe, except few politicians and others who by the nature of their work, are entitled to 24-hour police protection.
Dr Aning you are not making sense,do you want us to live in fear, civilians are being killed and properties are taken form it right owners. The police alone can't help.About a month ago in Tema ***barred word*** chased a guy in a Toyota car after withdrawing money from the bank, upon seeing three police man they guy decided to park for safety and protection. The robbers gave a warning shots and the three police men took to their heels. Is either they stop doing politics with the police service and bring back COP Kofi Boakye and Christian Tetteh Yohonu to save us or release some military men to assist the police service
Dr Aning - a typical example of a dunderhead with an undeserved PHD title.
