The Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has pointed out double standards on the part of groups and individuals opposing the mining of bauxite in the Atewa Forest.
According to the Minister, some of the individuals who are campaigning against the mining of bauxite in the Atewa Forest, raising environmental concerns, are on the other hand mining illegally in Atewa.
He said the illegal mining activities of those individuals have caused serious pollination to water bodies in the area but they did not seem to find anything wrong with their actions. However, he said they are joining local and international groups to oppose the mining of bauxite in the Atewa Forest by the Chinese.
The Minister made this known on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at the Information Ministry’s Meet the Press Series in Accra, warning that “let’s not engage in double standards.”
One of the groups opposing the Atewa Bauxite deal is Aroucha Ghana. Its Executive Director, Daryl Bosu, is on record to have said mining in the Atiwa forest would destroy water bodies in the area that serve as a source of drinking water for millions of people.
Mr. Bosu is reported to have said “our concern has been the target or the focal areas for which the government wants to exploit this bauxite. We are saying that the government should completely exclude the Atewa forest because of its water producing services from the deal with the Chinese.”
The Government of Ghana signed a $2 billion deal with China Sinohydro in exchange for its bauxite deposits in the Atewa Forest.
The Minister said Government was mindful about the sustainability of the environment and ecosystem in Ghana.

What was Ibrahim Mahama going to do with the Atiwa bauxite concession given to him by his brother? Is it not the same mining? But you were OK with that. And where from these Vodoo figures of thousands of ounces and billions of dollars?
I kind of side with the minister. If you are worried about the pollution of water bodies, what are you doing presently? Galamsayers are busy destroying everything, you are saying nothing about that, but once government talks of going into mining the place responsibly, it is all noise about pollution.
Prof Boateng should be careful, as he has been in galamsey before. The whole deal to some of us does not make sense because even galamseyers produced 750,000 ounces of gold within a period of 6years and this they sold and obtain 11.048 billion Dollars which they dissolved into the macro economy of Ghana within the period and the NPP government has gone for just 2bn. Dollars and is giving over a whole bauxite reserve for 50yrs. This does not make sense but they want Ghanaians to clap for them because they thought all of us are ***barred word*** of the facts. NDC is surely coming back to prove to the whole nation that galamsey is not evil if well monitored to maintain the environment and water bodies well. NPP should not think that they are coming back to power as signs are not pointing to that direction. Nana Addo can go back and swallow the rest of his frogs in Nigeria but this time around it won't work. Prof. Boatent has turned galamsey into a partisan venture and only npp members are being enrolled under the pretense of Community mining. EYES ARE WATCHING
