Voting has begun at 74 polling stations in Talensi in the Upper East Region to elect one of the eight candidates vying to represent the constituency in Parliament.
Thirty-nine thousand five hundred and twenty-three (39,523) eligible voters in the Talensi constituency are expected to cast their votes today in the by-election.
The seat became vacant after the incumbent MP, Mr Robert Nachinab Doameng Mosore of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) resigned to take up the position of a paramount chief of the Tongo.
Candidates
The candidates, according to the order as they appear on the ballot paper are Joseph Toatoba, Progressive People's Party (PPP), Dennis Atiah Tambil, Independent People's Party (IPP), James Mambora Doubil, New Vision Party (NVP), Benson Tongo Baba, National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Dr Wumbeogo Michael Namalteng, People's National Convention (PNC).
The rest are Yaro Bameezina Philip, Ghana Freedom Party (GFP),Isaac Kungarzore, United Progressive Party (UPP) and Wuni Thomas Pearson Duanab, NPP.
Earlier, the Upper East Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr James Arthur-Yeboah, entreated various stakeholders to cooperate with the EC for a successful election.
Commissioners
All seven commissioners including the Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Charlotte Osei, have converged in Talensi to monitor the electoral processes. International observers are also expected to monitor.
Security
The Upper East Regional Police Command Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr Thomas Agbanyo has given the assurance that security will be beefed up.
According to him, initially there were two armoured vehicles provided to be on stand-by but an additional two has been added to help curb any riotous situation.
Mr Agbanyo said two police personnel have been stationed at each polling station while three patrol teams will be on duty.
He explained that one patrol team has also been stationed along the road between Winkogo and Pwalugu while the second patrol is taking charge of the Winkogo and Tongo road.
The third patrol team, is monitoring events on the Sheaga-Gbane road, he added.
25 policemen are on stand-by to move in at anytime to resolve any emergency situation that could mar the election, Peacefmonline.com understands.
