Claims by Fiifi Kwetey, the Minister of Transport that drug money that flowed freely in Ghana masked an extremely ailing economy under former President John Kufuor, are “baseless”, “useless”, and “unfounded”, Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has said.
Speaking during the NDC’s ‘Setting the Records Straight’ forum in Accra on Thursday September 22, Mr Kwetey said: “Growth expectations are high, currency stability has returned, inflation looks set to trend downwards to sustainable basis, fiscal deficit is increasingly more under control, domestic and foreign investor confidence is increasing more and more and our latest information is actually showing that even the credit rating agencies are about to do a positive revision of Ghana’s rating again because the future absolutely is looking very bright under the very competent leadership of John Mahama.”
Comparing that with the term of the NPP with Mr Kufuor as President, Mr Kwetey said in 2008 when the NPP was finishing its term, it had “lost control of the cedi, inflation had reached 18%, gross reserves barely enough to cover two months of imports, Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and Ghana Commercial Bank were on their knees, nonperforming loans in the banking sector were at an all-time high,” with a budget deficit of 15% and a budget overrun of 11% and a “massive” arrears of over GHS4 billion altogether painted the picture of an economy that was gravely ill, yet this was an economy where cocaine cash was flowing very freely”.
But reacting to these comments in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Friday September 23, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said: “He (Fiifi Kwetey) is not someone to pay heed to. He was the same person who accused President Kufuor of stealing Ghana’s gold bars at the Bank of Ghana but when he was asked to produce the evidence during his vetting as Deputy Minister after the 2008 elections, he told the Appointments Committee of Parliament that he did not say that and that he was commenting on a newspaper publication.”
“So when this person speaks, should we listen to him? Ghana deserves better and we need to engage in more productive activities. What is the evidence that the NPP government got money from cocaine trade? Several people have been arrested under the NDC administration in connection with cocaine. Does that mean the government is engaged in cocaine? Under this government someone was arrested for possession of cocaine while a Ghana High Commission official vehicle was waiting at the airport for her. And so, who is actually sponsoring the cocaine business?
“But, for me, I will not say because an individual has been arrested under the NDC administration, it was President Mahama who was behind it. It will be baseless and unfounded on my part to say that as Fiifi Kwetey is trumpeting. This is a useless, unfounded, and baseless comment that should not be entertained at all.”

ndc is always spewing lies. If ndc had maintained the economy at where they inherited it, we would have been better off. ndc has taken us 10 years backwards.
As for drug money it neither here nor there like Osei Kyei Mensa Bonsu said but why veer away from the statistics because I taught you have been in government enough to talk with authority when it comes to figures. My problem with the NDC and their leadership is the materials they have available to rule effectively. The intellectual and skills available is always a suspect. With all the respect to our President, if he happens to be a member of the NPP, he should be no where the Presidency, not to mention brains like Alan, Botwe, up and coming. NDC as a party are even marginalizing the few brains they have that can effectively transform this nation. It is their CULTURE and so those who knows cannot cut the mark, resort to Backbiting, PHD, Licking the Boots and at worst JUJU like Namoale and co. Ghana must sit up because irrespective of who is in POWER we need the BRAINS TO BE AT WORK. We must listen to Lumumba.
fiifii kwettey as deputy finance minister came to Washington DC in 2012 as part of a Govt delegation. I learnt that at the meeting, he was going off with his fuuuuuuuuulish political propaganda talks so much so that the World Bank officials asked the Ghana delegation to get rid off him. Needless to say, the rest of the meeting was done without him present. Not long after, Kwettey was sent to ministry of Agric where he has destroyed Ghana agriculture. He has now been sent to Transport to destroy it too. Vote out Mahama and his fuuuuuuuulish choices of Govt ministers.
Ursula mistakenly mentioned it in 2009
Why waste your time responding to comments made by this "thing". If not NDC, no serious president will appoint this "thing" as a deputy minister not to talk about a minister.
You have been in government almost eight years now whom have you arrested and taken to court?@NDC guys
Please Fiifi ***barred word***. Why are we voltarians always used as propaganda tools for the NDC. Togbe Afedze said it and I support him. Please you are embarrassing us Fiifi. Why didn't they (NDC) choose an economist like Dufour or Amissah Arthur to respond. Please use your head. People of Ketu south actually are not happy about your use as scavenger in our party. Pleaaase we are begging you to protect the dignity of the Ewes.
What about Naayele who sponsored her? Little minds can't discuss big issues
when you have a bunch of ne'er do-wells in charge unfortunately you have ne'er do wells who are incapable of thinking independently and deeply falling over themselves to line up behind hollow and rather sad effusions. No self-respecting country will have nincompoops like Kwetey in key positions like being a minister, even if it was for kenkey cooking! Addai, Amaoteng, Kwakye, Amankwaa, which one of them can you provide incontrovertible evidence that the NPP government under Prez Kufuor supported their illegitimate activities? you cannot cite even one instance where a government vehicle was assigned on their travels overseas when they happened to be arrested. Linking or even insinuating that a government facilitated an individual's illegal activities when you don't have any evidence is the height of an incredulous level of thinking even beyond asinine. and to have a minister engage in such dribble takes the cake; as to followers like you, the least said the better. people like kwetey must be consigned to the ****bin!
