Former Effia Constituency chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Western Region, Alhaji Alidu Mahama, has denied media reports that his private residence is being sold for owing a “waakye” seller thousands of Ghana cedis.
According to the reports, a commercial court in Sekondi had ordered the sale of the private bungalow of the former NDC constituency chair for failing to pay for the above-mentioned food which he bought to feed party supporters and polling station agents who were assigned to monitor the various polling stations in the constituency about two years ago.
During the 2010 biometric registration exercise, the NDC former chairman, who was then the substantive Effia Constituency chairman, bought ‘waakye’ from ‘One in Town,’ a popular food vending joint in Takoradi, on credit.
Alhaji Alidu Mahama was therefore, indebted to the food seller to the tune of about GH¢4,000 at the end of the exercise.
It was said that efforts by the food vendor to collect her money from the former constituency chairman proved futile and so she initiated legal action against him.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE yesterday, Alhaji Alidu Mahama indicated that the case happened some years ago and was surprised it had resurfaced in the media.
He explained that even though a court in Takoradi ordered the sale of his private residence to defray the debt he owed the ‘waakye’ seller, that was not done because the NDC paid the debt.
“The story was reported in DAILY GUIDE when the court gave the order and I don’t know why some online portals are trying to create the impression that the story was a recent one. In any case, my house was not sold and the debt of GH¢4,000 owed the food seller was paid,” he pointed out.
